Gosling shared a statement through The New York Times’ Kyle Buchanan, starting by saying he’s glorified for his Academy Award nomination and “incredibly honored and proud that it’s for portraying a plastic doll named Ken.”

He went on to highlight that Barbie wouldn’t be complete without Gerwig and Robbie, emphasizing their crucial roles in the film’s success. He said,

“But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally celebrated film. No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit, and genius.”

Despite this, Barbie secured eight nominations, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. Ferrera, disappointed by the snubs, emphasized Gerwig’s world-building and Robbie’s portrayal of stereotypical Barbie, stating both deserved recognition.

As per Variety, the actress said,

“Greta has done just about everything that a director could do to deserve it. Creating this world, and taking something that didn’t have inherent value to most people and making it a global phenomenon. It feels disappointing to not see her on that list.”

Further, the Superstore star added,

“What Margot achieved as an actress is truly unbelievable. One of the things about Margot as an actress is how easy she makes everything look. And perhaps people got fooled into thinking that the work seems easy, but Margot is a magician as an actress in front of the screen.”

Ferrera noted Gerwig’s transformative work, turning an underestimated concept into a global phenomenon. It makes their absence from the nomination list disheartening.

The snubs remind us about the ongoing talk on diversity and recognition at these big awards. It’s clear that even with eight nominations for Barbie, the absence of Gerwig and Robbie in key categories is hard to ignore.
