In the season 4 finale, Homelander declares himself as the supreme leader, following political turmoil in the country. Starr sat down for a conversation with Vulture and discussed the aftermath of Homelander’s actions in the finale.

At the same time, Starr was also asked about Homelander’s maniacal laughter, especially when The Seven’s leader tortures the scientists in the lab where he was raised.

I pushed that out a little bit just to see what would happen. There was just crickets. Pure silence.

Starr made the above statement explaining his decision to go overboard with the laughter for the scene.

The actor added that after performing the scene, he was concerned that the laughter would not work since it didn’t draw out a reaction from his co-actors. However, when combined with the sadness and resentment Homelander feels toward the scientists, it showcases the character’s confused state.

Those scenes are really hard to do when you’ve got to really drive into a laugh. It’s almost a physical thing that takes over.

Starr made the above statement highlighting the challenges of playing Homelander, especially in his most unhinged moments. Kripke had previously endorsed Starr as a contender for the Best Actor Emmy Award for his performance in the series.

Moreover, Starr’s statement regarding the challenges in making his performance organic and grounded further proves his merit for an Emmy nod. However, the scene from the season 4 episode is the epitome of the same and not giving the actor an Emmy for it would truly be a crime.

The Boys is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
