Mickey Rourke’s Unique Approach for The Wrestler Shocked Darren Aronofsky

In an attempt to revive Mickey Rourke‘s career, Darren Aronofsky collaborated with him to create The Wrestler in 2008. However, the actor’s unconventional approach to playing his edgy roles shocked the filmmaker, and the crew members could not control the actor. Which eventually changed Aronofsky’s approach to traditional filmmaking.

“I think working with Mickey Rourke kind of changed my take on film-making because there was no way to really control him. It was more about sticking him in a room with a load of toys and letting him loose and then being in the moment with him and sort of directing in the moment it was almost like my own kind of performance.”

However, the unconventional approach which shocked the filmmaker, was the reason which made the film a massive hit as the film had a puny budget of $6 million but earned $ 44.7 million worldwide at the Box Office.

Mickey Rourke Almost Fought With Chris Jericho

In the 2008 film, Rourke played the role of a professional wrestler who is past his glory days as he is fighting with old age and health. His character was still trying to wrestle in order to live through his dying fame. The movie showed great promise, the moment it started production, and in aid of the film came WWE, which promoted the film through an on-screen angle.

The wrestling company used Chris Jericho as a heel, where he was mocking the legendary wrestler Ric Flair, calling him an embarrassment, and he also mocked Mickey Rourke’s role in The Wrestler. Jericho’s insult made the actor furious and in the 15th SAG Awards, the Barfly actor announced that he will be competing at WrestleMania 25, targetting Jericho.

The announcement led to a confrontation between the two on Larry King Live but showed second thoughts. However, Rourke got his revenge on the wrestler as Jericho fought Ricky Steamboat, Roddy Piper, and Jimy Snuka in a handicap match. Despite the odds Jericho won the match, he assaulted Ric Flair and challenged the actor, who entered the ring and knocked out the wrestler with a punch. After his victory, the Angel Heart actor was congratulated by The Nature Boy.
