Eiichiro Oda has shed light on the origins of One Piece and the thoughtful consideration that went into crafting its world. His insights reveal how a desire to break from convention and a heartfelt appreciation for those who supported him led to the creation of a story that has captured the imaginations of millions around the world.

A Pirate’s Tale of One Piece Born From Gratitude

In a rare interview from Los Angeles via The New York Times, Eiichiro Oda revealed that the central theme of friendship in One Piece stems from his own experiences and desires to create something unique in the manga landscape. He, who has been private throughout his career, explained that when he began creating One Piece in the late 1990s, he wanted to break away from the prevalent tropes in the manga at that time.

Oda stated:

There were plenty of heroes who fight the demons and save the world; the market was saturated with that kind of story. I wanted to do something different but relatable.

He also explained:

I understood that I had been supported and helped by a lot of people to get to where I was, so friendship became a central theme.

The mangaka’s decision to focus on friendship wasn’t just a narrative choice, but a reflection of his personal journey. The emphasis on camaraderie and mutual support throughout One Piece, particularly in the dynamics between the protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, and his diverse crew of pirates.

Strong Women and Rubber Pirate Challenging Convention

One Piece Stands out from its contemporaries through its portrayal of strong, capable female characters. Oda has spoken about his dissatisfaction with the common trope in the manga where female characters exist primarily to be rescued by male heroes. These sentiments drove him to create characters like Robin and Nami, who are integral to the story and possess their own strength and abilities.

In his world, female characters are depicted as capable fighters, who can hold their own in battles and contribute significantly to the crew’s success. Oda said:

In the manga I read as a kid, there was always a point where the heroine existed just to be rescued. That didn’t sit well with me;…I depict women who know how to fight for themselves and don’t need to be saved.

He also discussed the challenges of adapting Luffy’s rubber-like abilities, gained from eating an accursed fruit, to live-action. Initially skeptical about the possibility of a live-action adaptation, his perspective changed after watching Shaolin Soccer. The film’s successful blend of fantastical elements with live-action convinced him that modern technology could effectively bring the manga’s more outlandish aspects to life. He stated:

When I first started, I didn’t think there was any point in drawing a manga that could be remade in live-action. But when I saw the movie “Shaolin Soccer,” it felt like a manga-esque world brought to life. I changed my mind.

With the live-action series and the manga still going on strong after all those years, it is clear that Oda’s decision to focus on friendship and challenge conventions has paid off. His personal touch and commitment to his vision continue to shape the ever-expanding world of One Piece.

One Piece is available to watch on Crunchyroll.
