The Karate Kid and Cobra Kai universe might expand beyond what fans think is possible. In 2010, fans of the franchise saw a supposedly unconnected reboot of the franchise, starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan. This property seemed distinct from the 1984 iteration of the film, but all that might be changing.

Speaking with Deadline, Pope had a lot to say about properties Sony owns. Be it The Boys or Cobra Kai, there was a lot the executive had to say:

“They have some ideas in terms of expanding Cobra Kai and coming at the Karate Kid legacy in different ways. But yes, the movie is a good example too. It’s all of these. I think we’ve all learned these worlds can exist together and they can feel cohesive and they can feel additive, especially for the fans, and feel like big, big worlds that exist on lots of different levels, they don’t necessarily all exist in the same plane. Audiences are so savvy now and accepting multiple levels of the IP so the Cobra Kai universe lives on, that’s for sure.”

Pope refers to the new film announced by Sony that will continue the Karate Kid franchise. As Cobra Kai comes to an end, Sony is looking to advance the franchise in other manners, particularly through films. The film also received some exciting developments, and Pope is confident that fans are equipped enough to understand the shift in the franchise, and even appreciate it.

On the Sony Entertainment YouTube channel, it was announced that  Jackie Chan, who played Mr.Han in the 2010 remake, based on Mr. Miyagi from the 1984 feature will be starring alongside the original Karate Kid, Ralph Macchio, from the 1984 film.

Given that these films were assumed to be in different continuities, this is big news for fans of the franchise. The film is scheduled to be released in 2024, before which Jackie Chan might have a reason to appear in the Cobra Kai spin-off. Now that Mr. Han is a part of the mainline Karate Kid universe, this means that the character might appear in a myriad of Karate Kid media, including however Cobra Kai is going to be continued.
