There are a plethora of things, that can be said about Ridley Scott as a filmmaker, as his achievements as a director are unparalleled. The director is not limited to one genre of films, as he tends to specialize in working in different genres. From Alien or Exodus: Gods and Kings, his works in cinema are a piece of art that convinces people how great of a filmmaker he is. Even at his advancing age, Scott is not showing any signs of slowing down, as he recently came up with Napoleon.
While Ridley Scott has worked in almost every genre, his specialty is the sci-fi genre, as fans know that combining these two elements would give them an outstanding film. This is not a surprise because his 1979 film, Alien was a great watch, but he expressed his feelings when he was not asked to return for a sequel despite massive success at the box office.
Ridley Scott Shares Why He Never Returned To Aliens Franchise
Ridley Scott’s 1979 masterpiece is one of the films in the history of filmmaking. The sci-fi film tells the story of a crew in space, they come across a mysterious spaceship, and they are curious enough to explore the abandoned spaceship. As they explored it, the crew found themselves trapped inside with an extraterrestrial creature called Xenomorph, and its nest of eggs have taken over the ship.
As the film progresses, the movie builds a tense and terrifying atmosphere, making it one of the best movies to watch. While the film earned $184.6 million at the worldwide box office, the Prometheus director didn’t return for the sequel. During an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ridley Scott stated that he was never asked to return to direct the sequels, as he might have been too strict while filming.
“I was never asked to do the sequel. Maybe because I was such a tough guy when I was doing it, they didn’t want me back. But I was also in the habit of not wanting to do a sequel then either. So I would never have done it.”
Even though the director had stated that he would not be doing the sequels, he decided to return to the franchise in 2012, as he directed Prometheus which received a mixed response from the audience. Nevertheless, the film was entertaining to watch, perfect for a weekend horror film binge-watching session.
Ridley Scott’s Interesting Vision for Alien
Scott’s 1979 project was one of the best films and it was a revolutionary film that changed the genre. However, there was one scene that sparked a sense of controversy, as there was meant to be a ‘quasi-s*x’ scene in the film, one that was not a part of the final film. Sigourney Weaver revealed in the DVD special edition of Aliens that the entire idea was meant to be completely different.
“We actually wanted to have more of a quasi-s*x scene,” Weaver said, “We wanted the alien to come and look at her through the glass and be intrigued by the soft pinkness of her compared to him. We wanted him to be that intelligent, and that it kind of turned him on. Beauty and the Beast, I think we were going for.”
Even after 44 years, Ridley Scott’s Alien is one of the best extraterrestrial horror films to watch, as the film is simple and clean. Despite so much advancement in technology, the film has stood the test of time, and perhaps this is not because of the technology or plot but it was probably the simplicity of the film that has kept the movie still relevant.
Alien can be streamed on Hulu.
