Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan’s showstopping performances in the Daniels’ Everything Everywhere All at Once earned them recognition from the industry and worldwide. The 2023 Oscars, in particular, were eventful for the two stars, with Yeoh taking home the Best Actress award and Quan snagging Best Supporting Actor. Their collaboration wouldn’t conclude with the 2022 film, though.

The two eventually reconvened in the Disney+ fantasy action-comedy series American Born Chinese. This was, however, an unplanned occurrence. EEAAO star Stephanie Hsu is also among the cast members to grace the show. Unfortunately, as per recent reports, the show has been canceled after only one season. Several viewers and fans have expressed astonishment at this unforeseen development, considering the positive reception of the Quan and Yeoh starrer.
Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan’s American Born Chinese Has Been Canceled
Based on Gene Luen Yang’s 2006 graphic novel of the same name, American Born Chinese was created by Kelvin Yu. Besides starring Ke Huy Quan and Michelle Yeoh, the premise was led by a cast including Ben Wang, Jimmy Liu, Yeo Yann Yann, Daniel Wu, Chin Han, and many more. The Disney+ series debuted on May 24, 2023, offering audiences eight episodes in total.
Although the critical reception to the endeavor showcased its compelling narrative, Variety reports that a source holding considerable knowledge of the decision suggested that the show’s viewership proved insufficient for Disney to validate a second season.

This allegedly became the primary catalyst for American Born Chinese‘s cancelation. The article additionally mentions that the producers intend to shop the series. According to other reports, Disney attempted to establish the show’s appeal among viewers by releasing it across multiple platforms, with Roku, YouTube, Hulu, and ABC airing several episodes.
Some fans are perplexed by the decision to discontinue the show after only one season. For most, it was a delightful series to watch. Their reactions to the sudden news were observed on X, formerly Twitter.
Fans React To The Cancelation Of Michelle Yeoh And Ke Huy Quan’s Disney+ Show
On Rotten Tomatoes, the Kelvin Yu-created series boasted a 94% approval rating from 51 critic reviews. The audience score sits at a moderately impressive 82%. The witty, well-paced, and clever narrative of the series and the endearing performances of the cast members won over reviewers in particular.
Its relatable concoction of a coming-of-age story infused with elements of Chinese mythology felt unique to many viewers. Although criticism was directed at a few issues, the overall reception was warmly positive.
And this is the exact thing about the cancellation news that has many viewers in disbelief. However, some others have suggested that the development shouldn’t come as a surprise because, in their words, the show lacked adequate marketing and advertising. Seemingly hitting the mark with this observation, a few replies demonstrated that many weren’t aware of the show’s existence.
Following is what the fans and general audiences on X stated:

Not surprised tbh they barely advertised it as many have said and they seemed to not get even the actors to push it either 😤

Even though the show featured prominent faces from the EEAAO ensemble and debuted during a period post-Oscars when Quan and Yeoh’s popularity surged, it failed to attract or maintain ample viewership to validate greenlighting a second season. Contrasted against the show’s creative flair, engaging storyline, and captivating cast performances, it is unfortunate that the verdict is what it is.
American Born Chinese is available for streaming on Disney+.
