“They got into an argument over some trifling thing”: Not Vegeta, Akira Toriyama Gave One Dragon Ball Villain Turned Hero the Pettiest Origin Story

Beerus may be the God of Destruction but his origin story is as underwhelming as it gets.

SUMMARY

  • Beerus is one of the most prominent figures in the world of Dragon Ball.

  • The only reason that happened was because of a small matter gone awry.

Akira Toriyama’s world of Dragon Ball is one filled with stories upon stories leading to some of the most legendary battle sequences. The characters have their own origin stories that make them stand out and while some may be brilliantly thought out, others not so much. With the many characters that coexist in that world, there are also multiple versions of the stories that go hand in hand.

Two separate stories of Akira Toriyama’s creation, Dragon Ball Z and Super coexist in the universe with journeys of different characters taking place. One of those characters happens to be Beerus. The character acts as a central figure in the former story but what may be interesting is that he was already mentioned long ago in Dragon Ball Z.

Akira Toriyama’s Trivial Origin Story for Beerus

During an interview with Saikyo Jump in 2014 (via Kanzenshuu), Akira Toriyama talked about what led the Elder Kaiōshin to be sealed away in the Z sword. He talked about how two contradictory parties who are always at each other’s throats, The Kaiōshin and the Gods of Destruction decide to be civil once every millennia.

The Kaiōshin and the Gods of Destruction have never gotten along that well, but once every 1,000 years they go to each other’s realms and hold a coordination meeting.
The two were highly contrasting parties, one being the creator of planets while the other the destroyer. However, it became customary for them to gather around once every thousand years, visiting either realm to conduct a meeting.
Most millennia, this meeting would go smoothly without any problems. Unfortunately, one particular instance pushed the temporary peace and shattered it. A fight broke out, leading the God of Destruction to seal away the Elder Kaiōshin in the Z Sword.

Beerus’ Origins Much Before His Introduction

Akira Toriyama elaborated on the events that foretold the Elder Kaiōshin into being sealed away in the Z Sword. One God of Destruction, known through and through for his short temper, was displeased by a trivial matter, giving rise to an argument instead.

At this time, they got into an argument over some trifling thing, and a certain short-tempered God of Destruction sealed Elder Kaiōshin away inside a sword. Naturally, it wouldn’t have been proper for him to destroy the Kaiōshin Realm itself. By the way, that God of Destruction was Beerus.
Revealing this God of Destruction to be none other than Beerus, the now evil-turned-heroic character of Dragon Ball Super; Akira Toriyama gave him an origin story no one saw coming. The sheer pettiness and nature of the fight seems absurd on its own.
However, it is the fact that this petty fight led to the creation of the Z Sword and for the Elder Kaiōshin to be sealed away. It was his villain origin story way before he was even introduced in the manga.
