Netflix‘s One Piece has been doing great since its release. The show has garnered over 57.8M views to date, which guaranteed renewal for the series. In a recent interview with the co-showrunner Matt Owens, he talked about his opinions on how Jeff Ward’s Buggy the Clown became one of the popular characters from One Piece. He also talks about his success and appreciates his talent as an artist.

What did One Piece’s showrunner say about Jeff Ward’s Buggy the Clown?
Matt Owens was definitely not expecting Buggy to be among some of the most popular characters from the series. He told Deadline,
“I knew that he would hit; I knew that people would really like him. To the extent that they have, to the extent that they have been horny for him, that’s new for me, but I’m glad to see him getting the attention that he deserves as an artist.”
He was asked why the character didn’t meet his demise at the end, to which Owen replied,
“Dreams are very important in the One Piece world, and Oda has said before that what’s worse than death is a dream being taken away. So when you see a lot of the villains that we meet, they have these machinations, these desires — often nefarious — and the Straw Hats take those away from them.”
Despite all the villainous acts and chaos he instigated, the character deserved to live and see the light of another day. Eiichiro Oda’s mindset is the reason why One Piece is loved among Shonen fans, and it is, to date, one of the best Shonen series.
What did Matt Owens say regarding the Second Season of Netflix’s One Piece?
Owens said in the interview that he was looking forward to talking with Jamie Lee Curtis as soon as the SAG-AFTRA strike lifts. Season 2 will mostly trace around Luffy’s challenges as a leader. He also added that the writers “learned to trust their instincts from the success of the first season.”
Owens elaborated about Jamie Lee Curtis and her role as Dr Kureha.
“We have opportunities to stunt cast some roles, some rules that are very important, and it came out that Jamie Lee Curtis is a One Piece fan. As soon as she said that, we were like, okay, we have to try and get her on the show. What can we do? And Doctor Kureha, very luckily, is a character who is coming up in our story, and is someone who is perfect for Jamie Lee Curtis.”
With the show already released, Owens spoke about how “there are things to look at and lessons to learn as we move forward.” He had a plan ready with some outlines, which he was going to discuss with Eiichiro Oda. He said, “Part of my trip in April was to talk to him about some of the early ideas that we had, talking to him about things that I want to include to just make sure that our ideas are in line with what he thinks.”
Owens wanted to check in with the author to make sure their way of portraying things pleases the actual creator of the show.
