However, his recent 4K restorations of the films Aliens and True Lies received criticisms for using AI to smoothen out the image and remove the grain. The resulting image was said to be lesser than the older Blu-Ray releases. Cameron fired back at these critics, asking them to get out of their mothers’ basements and meet people.

Hence, when the 4K restored re-releases of his films Aliens and True Lies came out, many patrons were disappointed with the image quality. Some accused the team of having enhanced the image using AI, smoothening out the grains, and making it look more digital than classic film (via Jo Blo).

However, the filmmaker fired back at the critics of the 4K restorations in an interview with THR,

When people start reviewing your grain structure, they need to move out of mom’s basement and meet somebody. Right? I’m serious. I mean, are you f*cking kidding me? I’ve got a great team that does the transfers. I do all the color and density work. I look at every shot, every frame, and then the final transfer is done by a guy who has been with me [for years].

The filmmaker mentioned that the same process is used in the Avatar films and that the critics needed to get a life.

While he fields criticisms about his older films, James Cameron has also been working hard on the subsequent installments of his Avatar franchise. While the second film was released after a gap of thirteen years, the third film’s title was announced earlier this week at the D23 Expo as Avatar: Fire and Ash, with a December 2025 release date.

Amidst rumors that he would not be directing the final two films of the franchise, Cameron rubbished them away and said that he would do it as long as he was capable. He said to THR,

I mean, they’re going to have to stop me. I got plenty of energy, love doing what I’m doing. Why would I not? And they’re written, by the way. I just reread both of them about a month ago. They’re cracking stories. They’ve got to get made.

He also seemed to have great enthusiasm for Avatar: Fire and Ash as well, calling it ‘really f*cking cool’.
