The DCU has hired star director James Gunn as a co-CEO alongside Peter Safran, to lead their stable of superheroes on a new, more successful path, hopefully emulating the magic Gunn spun over at rival superhero studio, Marvel, for the MCU, especially in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.

Gunn has delivered time and again for the MCU, but he was fired from the massively successful studio not too long ago when some very old crude tweets of his resurfaced. He was rehired by Marvel eight months later, but as Gunn himself has said, the interlude was understandably very rough on him, physically and emotionally.

The Guardians had swung to the rescue of James Gunn

It wasn’t easy being fired by Marvel, especially after all the success he had brought them. However, star director James Gunn revealed that the cast of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise had come together when he was fired and helped immensely. He said,

“We went through this journey where we went into the belly of the beast, and I was thrown out – and the people that I gave life to by hiring, saved me and brought me back into the fold.”

Gunn singled out actors Zoë Saldaña, Karen Gillan, and Pom Klementieff as those from the cast who had come forward to help him.

Gunn revealed,

“But the things I think of from that time are the love that I got from my family and friends. I think of how Zoë Saldaña and her husband came over to fix me a meal the night after it happened. How Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff came over to just hang out with me, to be my friend.”

Fans and viewers will be understandably moved to see the actors grouping around their director to help him out. It is, after all, quite rare to see such acts of humanity in a cutthroat environment in the film industry.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is important to James Gunn and the cast

James Gunn had been fired from Marvel over some crude comments he had tweeted years ago but then was rehired to work on the third installment of the franchise, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, (2023), which stars Zoë Saldaña, Karen Gillan, and Chris Pratt, among others. The director said,

“We have this other story, of this group of people who made each other’s careers at the same time. We grew up together in that respect. None of us were big stars when it started out. Zoë [Saldaña] was the biggest.”

Gunn, in an interaction with Empire, mentioned how this movie meant so much more than the other ones, because of the emotional journey all of them had been on while making it.

In fact, Gunn had gone on to compare the tough period of his life after being fired as going ‘into the belly of the beast‘, but thankfully, his cast had been around to save his life.

“We went through this journey where we went into the belly of the beast, and I was thrown out – and the people that I gave life to by hiring, saved me and brought me back into the fold. They pulled me onto the life raft. And now we’re able to finish all of this together. So when they see this footage [at Comic-Con], they’re reminded of this whole emotional journey we’ve all been on.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit theatres on 5th May 2023 in what is likely to be a final flourish from the accomplished director for the MCU.
