For a franchise as big as the Harry Potter franchise adapting seven long books into 8 movies was an extremely Herculean of a task. Furthermore, the movies often adopted a different approach to portray the storyline, changing scenes or altering them and even adding scenes that weren’t there in the books.

Anybody who has seen the movies or read the Harry Potter books will know the relationship between Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy has always been hostile and spiteful. Many fans have expressed their concerns about Tom Felton‘s Draco, stating that he was forced to be the evil guy and was struggling just as much as Daniel Radcliffe‘s Harry.

While Potter saves Draco in the last film and book and we see a sort of a character arch, there is a crucial scene that could have changed their relationship and given Draco the salvation he much deserved.

In the last movie when Harry wakes up after pretending to be dead during the Battle of Hogwarts, Draco throws his wand to him and the last grand duel between Voldemort and Harry would have taken place then. Instead, we got Harry waking up and the duel taking place leading to the Dark Wizard’s end, without the special moment between the two archnemisis.

In a YouTube video of the deleted scene, many fans stated,

“They should’ve kept this. So their relationship would come full circle. They were bitter rivals since they were young. Now they helped each other for the same goal. It will also show the audience that Draco isn’t a bad person at all.”

Even Tom Felton himself felt that that one scene should have made it to the final cut.

Tom Felton’s memoir Beyond the Wand: The Magic and Mayhem of Growing Up a Wizard, revealed some startling details about his life on the sets of Harry Potter. During one instance the actor wrote about the deleted scene which could have changed Harry and Draco’s relationship and could have helped his troubled character get the support and salvation he needed.

“For me, Draco’s arc in the final films gets to the very heart of one of the main themes of the ‘Harry Potter’ stories: the theme of choice. Harry is the product of a family who love him so much, they are prepared to die for him. Draco is the product of a family who bully and abuse him. But when they have the freedom to make their own choices, they reach a similar destination.”

Felton further maintained that both his and Daniel Radcliffe’s character were two sides of the same coin, both troubled and struggling to make the right choices, but with Harry being the only one with all the apparatus to do so.
