Vanessa Kirby started her career with appearances in a sleuth of dramas, quickly etching her name in the hearts of many folks. No wonder big directors came calling for her. And she has only gone from strength to strength ever since. Yet there could have been the odd hiccup in her acting career. The Mission: Impossible 7 – Dead Reckoning star was about to lose out on one of her most iconic roles because of a silly reason.
Vanessa Kirby’s biggest ‘What If…’
Vanessa Kirby has shown over the course of her career that she has what it takes to perform any role. One such role that gave fans a glimpse of her range was the role of Princess Margaret in The Crown.
The 35-year-old got the perfect chance to flex her acting muscles playing the late Queen Elizabeth’s sister. But what fans don’t know is how she was almost not cast in the role because of a small birthday mishap.
The cost of a fake tan
In Late Night with Seth Meyers, Kirby opened up about how her screen test could have very well cost her the role. The Pieces of a Woman star revealed how she almost blew it all up for herself. In the lead-up to the birthday lunch with her friends, she applied some fake tan on her ankles. And that is where it all began to go awry.
She continued,
“Then I went to my screen test and I borrowed some of mum’s ill-fitting skirts and, like, pearls just to look a little bit Margarety… I just forgot about the ankles.” (Late Night Show with Seth Meyers)
How terrible that mistake would turn out to be she would realize real soon.
Vanessa Kirby was lucky to not lose out on The Crown
The Me Before You star continued,
“And I walked into my screen test, and, all four of the directors and Peter Morgan, the creator, just went straight to my ankles… They were looking at them for about ten minutes as I was trying to get into character and I was trying to be Margaret.” (Late Night Show with Seth Meyers)
Not able to control their shock, Peter Morgan finally couldn’t help but ask what went wrong there. The tan had become much worse, developing into a luminous orange color. That was all everyone could focus on.
As Morgan would later reveal, the tan could have very well cost her the role of Princess Margaret. But Kirby rode the wave to get what was deservedly hers.
