Having completed 201 episodes of The Office, John Krasinski’s role in the office was received warmly by audiences worldwide. A sales representative at a paper distribution company called Dunder Mifflin, Krasinski effortlessly translated the character’s intelligence and mild-mannered characteristics on the screen. But there was one particular incident that forced the Jack Ryan actor to take a firm stand.

John Krasinski took a firm stand, saving The Office from harsh criticism

One of the central themes of the series included the relationship between Jim and Pam (Jenna Fischer). A love story between receptionist Pam and sales executive Jim provided the audience with a heartwarming tale of an office romance that finally culminated in a marriage. However, during the eighth season of the show, Lindsey Broad’s character Cathy was introduced, posing as a potential threat to Jim and Pam’s relationship.

In a revelation from Welcome to Dunder Mifflin: The Ultimate Oral History of The Office, John Krasinski recalled an anecdote where he firmly refused to shoot a scene where Jim cheated on Pam. Explaining the reason for his firm stance, Krasinski said,

“That’s the only time I remember putting my foot down. I remember saying things that I never thought I’d say before, like, I’m not going to shoot it. My feeling is there is a threshold with which you can push our audience. They are so dedicated. We have shown such great respect to them. But there’s a moment where if you push them too far, they’ll never come back. And I think that if you show Jim cheating, they’ll never come back.”

Pointing out how Jim’s actions might reflect on the dedicated audience of the show, Krasinski firmly explained that something like this could potentially alienate the viewers, probably pushing them away too far from their beloved characters.

Creator’s vision for the Jim and Pam storyline

Reportedly, The Office creator Greg Daniels had a very different vision for the storyline of the couple. Initially, Daniels wanted the viewers to be worried about Jim’s fidelity in order to create a sense of tension and drama. However, even though he ultimately wanted to deliver a satisfying ending, Krasinski’s explanation about why he did not want to go ahead with the shooting of the scene convinced him to drop it.

As a result, the show chose not to show Cathy as a threat to Jim and Pam’s relationship. In order to dissolve the situation, the makers instead had Dwight (Rainn Wilson) come to the rescue when Jim called him, claiming there were bed bugs in his hotel room.

In the end, Cathy’s brief presence in the series’ trope did not affect Jim and Pam’s relationship, staying true to its romantic storyline, garnering nothing but love from the audiences.
