Before passing away, Kentarou Miura gifted the fans one of the best manga ever. He created a masterpiece with one of the most iconic rivalries ever. His presence of mind and creativity were very well depicted in his magnum opus. Guts’ journey to put an end to his former friend has kept the anime fans busy for more than three decades.
Berserk has one of the most beautiful drawings, and the minute details were done so well. But the mangaka said that he was not good at drawing manga panels. It may sound surprising, but during an old interview, he confirmed that he had a problem drawing manga panels. Kentarou Miura really went from being bad at creating manga panels to becoming one of the best mangakas.
Kentarou Miura’s Manga Panels Were Not up To the Mark
Kentarou Miura had a knack for drawing during his childhood. He used to copy Yoshikazu Yasuhiko and Fujihiko Hosono. After copying them, he tried to explore the manga world by drawing manga-like pictures. Having opted for fine arts, he was good at drawing, but manga was different from drawing. Miura sensei had difficulty drawing manga panels but was fascinated by it. He tried to blend over-the-top and intricate stories with his imagination to give birth to something new.
When talking about his weakness in drawing manga panels, Kentarou Miura said,
“You know how they said on [the TV show] Manga Yawa that I was bad at drawing? They’re absolutely right. Ever since high school, I’ve been trying all sorts of different things to combine being good at drawing reality with being good at drawing manga art. If I were doing a story like Fist of the North Star, I would be able to really concentrate entirely on just drawing well.”
Even though he left no place for complaints, he found satisfaction with his work much later. Initially, he took inspiration from other popular manga of his time but was careful not to get too carried. After much difficulty, he developed his personal style, which made him the Leonardo Da Vinci of his drawing manga panels.
Kentarou Miura’s Love and Obsession Led to the Creation of Berserk
Unlike his friends, who were great at making girlfriends and fighting, Kentarou Miura was good at drawing and chose to pursue fine arts. He wanted to become the best in that category. He wanted to show off his skills like his friends, and soon turned out to be an obsession for him. Even though obsessions can create problems, in his case, it made him one of the most popular mangaka.
Being good at drawing was not good enough for him, so he gave his all to learning everything about drawing manga-like pictures, which led to the creation of Berserk. Berserk began its serialization in 1989 and has published 42 volumes, selling, more than a million copies worldwide.
After experiencing a horrific incident, he vowed to take revenge against his former friend, Griffith. Griffith joined hands with the otherworldly beings and came to be known as Femto. With a prosthetic metal hand and a massively large, Guts is still yet to complete his revenge. After Miura sensei passed away, his friend Kouji Mori took over the manga. It will be interesting to see whether he can bring out the passion of Kentarou Miura.
