Kyle MacLachlan Assures Fallout Fans The New TV Show Will Honor the Video Game

Being a sci-fi fan himself, Kyle MacLachlan didn’t hesitate when joining forces with Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet to jump headfirst into this Prime Video project, which is also executive-produced by Jonathan Nolan. Given the track record of such adaptations, he is moving ahead with caution regarding the fan reception. It’s only normal for them to view it through the lens of skepticism. Fallout is undoubtedly one of the biggest and most popular games out there, with a legion of die-hard fans.

While there have been many live-action video game adaptations, only a few have managed to captivate the audience effectively. Thus, in an interview with Variety, MacLachlan elaborated on this point. He said,

“The people that play the video games that are real fans are both excited and somewhat hesitant, I think, because they’ve been burned before.”

However, he believes that with more snippets and teasers being released, they are gradually gaining the trust of the fans in the process. While they may not be sufficient, he believes they have contributed to shifting the tone among the masses.

“But as we’ve been progressively getting into more press about it, as more of the teasers have come out, I find that the tone is shifting from one of ‘Oh, I hope I don’t mess it up’ to one of ‘Oh, I’m so excited. I think this looks pretty great.’”

One can only hope that it turns out to be good. However, given his assurance to honor the original material coupled with some promising snippets, it’s true that it’s shaping up to be quite exciting.

Jonathan Nolan Says This TV Show Will Bring a New Flare to the Fallout World

While tinkering with such material typically yields mixed results, this venture might just defy the odds. Fallout appears to draw inspiration from retro-futuristic and atompunk sci-fi motifs. In an interview with Hindustan Times, Jonathan Nolan said,

“What attracted me to the show in the first place was its unique tone. They don’t look like anything before. They’re dark, ambitious, violent, but they’re also funny and weird. There’s political commentary and satire about what American had become before the world was blown to smithereens. I’d never seen all these flavours together in one place.”

He also explained that to enhance its appeal, he incorporated humor into the mix.

“We were filming in the midst of the pandemic with masks on, so it was good to be in touch with the lighter side. The shoot was all weirdly optimistic, and I hope the show has rubbed off on that too,”

Now, he hopes that audiences find what they’re seeking in projects like this one and beyond. As a devoted fan himself, he simply hopes he’s done his job well. He revealed,

“To be given the opportunity to take something you experienced as a fan, as a gamer, that you love… I didn’t know anything about the game when I sat down to play Fallout 3. I just wanted a game, and I knew that they were good and different. I hope the audience experience in this show what I did while playing the game – you never quite know what’s gonna happen next, what’s behind the corner, what the game is gonna do. It has a different ruleset than anything I’d played before and I hope the audience feels the same for anything they’ve watched before.”

The show is set to release on Prime Video on the 11th of April, and it has gaming fans eagerly anticipating a unique experience in the world of Fallout.
