Matthew Vaughn, known for comic book adaptations like Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class, discussed modern comic book films.
Recently, the director shared his thoughts on subpar visual effects that are harming superhero movies. He said he “genuinely don’t know what’s happening with the superhero [genre].”
Vaughn also believes that DC, which is guided by Gunn and Safran, can succeed with a quality-over-quantity strategy. He wishes Feige would do the same for Marvel. But obviously, DC has this one advantage over MCU.
Matthew Vaughn Believes James Gunn Has That One Advantage Over Kevin Feige That Can Beat MCU
In a recent interview with ScreenRant, the Stardust director said that the studios have focused so much on the superhero elements that they have overlooked the importance of storytelling and the quality of the film itself. He continued:
“I think at least DC is under… I think James Gunn and Safran, they’ve got a good chance of popping, and hopefully [Kevin] Feige will go back to less is more and make less films and concentrate on making them great.”
Vaughn believes that the DC universe has a good chance of achieving success (under the guidance of James Gunn and Peter Safran). It’s because they focus more on quality and less on quantity, and this one approach can beat MCU.
He also hoped that Kevin Feige (President of Marvel Studios) should adopt a “less is more” approach — and focus on making fewer films and ensuring high quality.
While Vaughn has hopes for Gunn and Safran’s universe, he also expressed his surprise over the poor performance of the recent release of The Flash.

Vaughn expressed surprise about the poor performance of Warner Bros.’ The Flash at the box office. The movie, starring Ezra Miller and Michael Keaton, grossed only $108 million domestically and didn’t reach $300 million globally. The director told (via ScreenRant):
“What really freaked me out was that I really enjoyed ‘The Flash. I thought it was a really good film, right? And it died at the box office, right? And I’m like, ‘Wait, hold on, this is a good movie. What happened?’ And I don’t know whether that was superhero fatigue; you’ve just seen it done. So even now that we’ve made it well, there was some really, really complicated, hard and quite special, unique filmmaking in that film. Which I don’t think [Andy] Muschietti got enough credit for what they pulled off.”
He believed it was a good film with unique filmmaking, but superhero fatigue or oversaturation might be responsible for its underperformance (despite its quality).
Vaughn’s upcoming project Argylle is set to release on February 2, 2024, through Apple and Universal Pictures.
