It’s been 40 years since the initial release of Ralph Macchio’s The Karate Kid in 1984, and still, the franchise is going strong with various sequels and even television series like Cobra Kai. Now, Sony has announced a new and untitled Karate Kid movie, starring Jackie Chan, on its way to hit the theatres in 2024.
According to reports, Jackie Chan’s Karate Kid movie is supposedly set to release on December 13, this year. While production is currently going on, as Sony promised to return to the original franchise with this upcoming movie, the release date still seems unachievable. The production company might have to reschedule the alleged date of release.
Reported Cast and Storyline for the Upcoming Karate Kid
Following in the footsteps of Ralph Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso from the 1984 original The Karate Kid movie, the world witnessed a renewed iteration of the film with Jaden Smith’s Karate Kid in 2010. Thereafter, fans of the franchise have been showered with numerous sequels and television series surrounding the iconic franchise.
However now, Sony seems to have a new and better plan for the franchise. After trying out different things that could work for the Karate Kid franchise, Sony seems to have decided to “return to the original Karate Kid franchise” as per ScreenRant reports. Further, as per IMDb reports, it has been stated that the new Karate Kid movie’s plot will witness Ben Wang as a young teenager from China, trying to find his identity and strength in martial arts.
Through Wang’s journey of self-discovery, the movie will star Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio in their respective roles from their previous movies. Chan and Macchio’s appearance in the movie was previously announced in November 2023. As of now, the highly-anticipated legacy sequel is said to have hired Ming-Na Wen and Sadie Stanley as the newest members of the film’s rapidly growing ensemble.
Jackie Chan’s Movie has Reportedly Revealed its Release Date
As Ralph Macchio is set to return as Daniel LaRusso from his original The Karate Kid movie, Jackie Chan is said to return as Mr. Han from the 2010 Karate Kid remake. But with all things said so far, fans began wondering about the final release date of the film. While originally it was set to release on June 7, 2024, it has now shifted to the end of this year.
According to reports from the outlet, it has been alleged that Sony Pictures pushed back the release date for the film to December 13, 2024. Although the release has been postponed to the end of this year, it still seems impossible to achieve for Sony, given the work they are still left with, regarding casting, plot, and promotion.

Although fans would be more than glad to witness Jonathan Entwistle’s Karate Kid movie in theatres by the end of 2024, netizens seem to believe that it will be rather difficult for Sony to make it happen. With work delayed due to the SAG/AFTRA strikes in 2023, fans find it almost impossible for Sony to manage all the work within the eight months of assigned timeframe.
