In a past interview with Yahoo! Movies during the 2017 CinemaCon, the Thor star revealed that he became part of Transformers: The Last Knight because he felt that the filmmaker had created something truly one-of-a-kind with the franchise. He said that he had only seen this kind of creative intellect in other filmmaking legends.

He said the way Bay described the creation and execution of these extraterrestrial beings was enough to convince him of his talent. He said:

“All those machines and those Transformers are created by Michael. And he was telling me about the work he did on them – how he would refine them and go into the special effects guys and design them and get all the details of light on metal and all that. He told me all that at breakfast before I started on the film,” Hopkins added. “I thought, ‘This guy’s a genius. He really is.’ He’s the same ilk as Oliver StoneSpielberg and Scorsese. Brilliance. Savants, really, they are. He’s a savant.”

He also once revealed that he feels most stars out there do not possess that creative intellect that legendary stars possess, which forces them to lean heavily on filmmakers to execute their next shot.
