The Hulk is one of the strongest superheroes in the Marvel Universe. With sheer brute strength and rising anger, the green machine can take on any threat head-first. That is one of the reasons why many of the Avengers or the Illuminati call upon the Hulk whenever there is a particularly powerful threat, especially when it comes to Thanos.

The Hulk and the Mad Titan have fought a few times in the comics, although their hand-to-hand combats have been few and far between. Fans got to see a taste of their fight in Avengers: Infinity War as well. However, the recent comics see a much different outcome than in the film. In the ongoing Thanos (2023) comic book series, Hulk and Thanos face off against each other.

The opening sequence of Avengers: Infinity War sees Josh Brolin’s Mad Titan Thanos trade blows with Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk amidst the massacred Asgard. The fight ends with the Hulk being beaten to a pulp and then sent to Earth via Bifrost to get help from the rest of the Avengers. The fight between Hulk and Thanos sparked a debate among fans as to who would win.

While Thanos is powerful and intelligent, with access to the Infinity Stones, he has admitted in the past to not be as strong as the Hulk. The green rage machine has the potential to get stronger as he gets angrier, making him even more of a threat than his natural self. Hence, Thanos has managed to avoid fighting for too long or trade blows with him in the comics.

However, whenever the two have faced off against each other, Thanos has had the upper hand due to sheer wits. According to Comic Basics, the Mad Titan has won against the Hulk eight times in the nine times that they have fought. One of the most popular instances is his fight against the Hulk in the Infinity Gauntlet storyline where he wins against the Jade Giant by using the reality stone.

One particular instance where the Hulk has won is in a non-canonized alternate reality where the Hulk pulverizes Thanos after being accused of eating too much. Occurring in the Marvel Zombies storyline, Zombie Hulk bashes Thanos’ head, stating that he would now be eating the share of ‘Prune Chin’ as well.

In the ongoing Thanos (2023) storyline, Hulk and Thanos face off against each other as the Illuminati tries to safeguard a woman that the Titan is after. Thanos is on the verge of taking possession of the girl and in the process has launched an attack on Fresno. However, the Illuminati call upon the services of the Hulk to stop him while they take the girl, Roberta to safety.

The battle goes differently than it did in Avengers: Infinity War as the Hulk throws punch after punch at Thanos, who is trying to concentrate on getting the girl back. At one point, Hulk and Doctor Strange team up to fight Thanos, who fights back both of them. Hulk also teams up with Iron Man to fight Thanos, and at one point punches the Titan so hard that he goes flying.

However, the fight is left incomplete as Thanos escapes to find the girl, as he hotwires a truck and drives to the safe house. The Illuminati and the Hulk are at loggerheads with each other as the latter is not a fan of Doctor Strange after he tried to kill him. It is also revealed that the girl, Thanos is after is the Mistress of Death.
