One of Will Smith’s most iconic and definitive movies is his 1996 classic, Independence Day. The movie is the reason the actor rose to fame and rightfully so as the movie grossed over $800 million worldwide. The film is about Earth getting attacked by aliens which results in a group of people gathering in the Nevada Desert to defend the human race and counterattack before the aliens strike again on Independence Day.
The movie was a massive success for those involved and gathered a pretty large fandom. The movie has become quite the classic and showcases Smith’s abilities to freestyle, as a lot of the most hilarious scenes in the movie can be credited to his improvisation capabilities. This also includes one of the most iconic scenes in the film, which was completely unscripted.
Will Smith Broke Character During Iconic Scene In 1996’s Independence Day
A little after the one-hour mark of Will Smith’s Independence Day, the actor has a scene, filmed on the salt flats near the Great Salt Lake in Utah, where he can be seen dragging an unconscious alien across the desert. Here, Smith’s character suddenly shouts “And what the hell is that smell?” followed by him kicking the alien in frustration. Apparently, this scene was unscripted and was a genuine question on Smith’s side.
The smell that Smith mentioned was due to the brine shrimp. The brine shrimp are aquatic crustaceans found in the Great Salt Lake. When these shrimp die, the dead and decaying bodies sink to the bottom of the shallow lake. This can cause a problem when it gets windy as the bottom mud is disturbed and the smell of these millions of decaying brine shrimp can be quite disgusting. This was a fact that Will Smith was apparently unaware of and resulted in some hilarious dialogue.
