“This is a moment years in the making for the Diablo IV team” Diablo IV Becomes Fastest Selling Video Game in Blizzard History

Blizzard have revealed that their latest release Diablo IV has also become their fastest-selling video game ever, although this comes with some pretty important caveats. No specific numbers were released by Blizzard with regards to sales, bar their comments surrounding the feat anyway, but Diablo IV has been played a ridiculous 93 million hours since its early access release on June 1st. To put that into context, that is 3,870,000 days or just over 10,600 years. It’s been played a lot. By a lot of us.

Diablo IV – A Huge Success

In a statement from the Diablo IV general manager Rod Fergusson, he said “We’re extremely proud to offer players the richest story ever told in a Diablo game. Players have a range of choices, including personal character customization, equipping personalized skills for battling horrific demons, or collecting Legendary loot to support your playstyle while discovering new ones. Since the game was first announced in 2019, the support from millions of players around the world drove us toward this release of our dark vision of Sanctuary. Hail Lilith, Blessed Mother.”. Clearly the man is incredibly passionate about his latest video game property, and the players seem to be responding in sales and played hours.

Now whilst Diablo IV has been out on early access since June 1st, it only released to the wider world today, on June 6th, which makes the ‘fastest selling’ title a little less impressive, but still impressive none-the-less.

The game itself has been well received all across the world by fans and critics alike. Our video game critic Massimo Castelli said “The big draw of the game in my opinion comes from the class customisation that is available… There is no bigger thrill than drawing aggression for the rest of your party…” drawing attention to the game’s fantastic and varied class system, offering an already incredibly replayable game even more variety.

Diablo IV – Two More Expansions Planned

As well as record-breaking numbers for the developer, Blizzard have also announced at least two expansions for the game, or at least, that man Rod Fergusson has. Speaking to Kinda Funny, he said “As I sit here we’re about to launch the main game, we’re finishing up season one, we’re working on season two, we’re working on expansion one, we’re kicking off expansion two…we’re working on that now and we haven’t even launched the game.”.

So there we have it, as well as two expansions to the main game, we have confirmation that the game will feature at least two seasons worth of additional content, challenges and more. Fergusson has previously hinted at the expansions for Diablo IV having branching narratives and a rich, context driven storyline, so we’ll have to wait and see what that brings.

Two expansions for Diablo IV already means we’ll be getting more content and the previous two games, with both Diablo II and Diablo III only getting one expansion a piece. It’d also be a fair bet to assume that with the cost of games being as high as they are now, and the GaaS model becoming unfortunately so prominent, the developer may not stop at just the two expansions, but that is purely conjecture on our part.
