Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has started the year with its highly anticipated action miniseries, Echo, which makes its debut on Disney+. Based on the beloved Marvel comic of the same name, Echo comes to life under the vision of American producer and television writer Marion Dayre.
As the cast and others came together for a special launch event on the red carpet outside the Regency Village Theater in Westwood, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige made a revelation by saying that this miniseries is the darkest show so far in the studio’s history.
Echo is Marvel’s “Darkest show so far,” Says President Kevin Feige
At its premiere event, Marvel President Kevin Feige said that among all the shows made by the studio to date, this miniseries starring Alaqua Cox, Chaske Spencer, Tantoo Cardinal, Devery Jacobs and many more is the darkest one. This is the first-ever mature-rated project in the company’s history, showing off fast-paced action and brutal violence.
While joining others at the premiere, Kevin Feige spoke on the darkness and depth of the show. Feige said:
“This is a TV-MA show. This is an adult show. Just like the Marvel Knights Comics where Echo first started, it goes much deeper and much darker in ways that we could only do with a TV-MA rating, so I am excited for people to see, as readers of the comics know, the different tonalities that we’ve been able to do in all of our shows and this being the darkest one yet.” (Source: Marve Studios)
TV-MA-rated show means this is not suitable for below 17 years children and meant for mature audiences only. Alaqua Cox reprises her role as Maya Lopez from Hawkeye in this spin-off series, directed by Sydney Freeland and Catriona McKenzie. Also, Vincent D’Onofrio returns as the antagonist Wilson Fisk a.k.a Kingpin.

Initially scheduled to hit the screen last year on November 29, the dual strike in Hollywood forced the showrunners to delay the release date.
Echo Director & EP Sydney Freeland Did Not Intend to Make a TV-MA Show
In many ways, Echo marks a new beginning for Marvel studio. One of them is it’s the first TV-MA show made by them. Shedding light on how they crafted this, executive producer and head of streaming television and animation at Marvel Studios Brad Winderbaum explained during a press conference:
“Echo is a more adult show. It’s our first TV-MA show, but we didn’t set out to make a TV-MA show. We set out to make a Maya Lopez show, and this is a character who has a violent past, who’s dealt with some real trauma, who has really difficult decisions to make, and who ultimately has to confront people she loves in order to grow and change.” (Via Movie Web)
Echo co-director and executive producer Sydney Freeland in an interview with Deadline stated how they made this miniseries.
“We did not set out to make a TV-MA show, but we did know it was going to be grounded. It was going to be gritty. It was going to be a little more visceral and street level, and the question was just, how [far] can we go? For myself, I’m down to go as far as [I can]. I want to push the envelope as far as Marvel will let me.”
All five episodes of Echo streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.
