Even when this particular animated series might be considered for kids back in the day, Avatar: The Last Airbender is something that transcends the boundaries of age and culture to truly depict something that’s one of a kind. Even after almost 15 years since the show’s conclusion, the main character Aang manages to inspire everyone who gets to know him through the show’s medium.
Thus, with a character having a legacy this profound and inspiring, it’ll naturally be upsetting to hear how he met his demise in the lore of the narrative. According to the original writers of the animated series, it was revealed that the reason for Aang’s death was his being trapped in the iceberg for over a hundred years, which sapped away much of his life energy.
Avatar: The Last Airbender Writers Revealed How Aang Dies In The Narrative
Everyone wants to see their favorite characters from their favorite shows and films have a happy and peaceful life after their tough times, and this sentiment of the fans for Aang, the main protagonist of Avatar: The Last Airbender, was the same.
Unfortunately, in the direct sequel of the original series, titled Avatar: The Legend of Korra, it was revealed that after living a life of a legend, the character took his last breaths before he passed on into the afterlife.
Since his days of adulthood were not explored enough, especially since he died in the narrative before the sequel’s events, fans were left questioning the reason for Aang’s death. For this, original writers Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino revealed that The Last Airbender’s unfortunate death was caused due to his Life Energy being depleted when he was trapped in the iceberg 100 years before his revival.
According to the writers, Aang died due to drained life energy and health complications caused by the 100 years he spent trapped in the iceberg. He was biologically the youngest team Avatar member to pass away. pic.twitter.com/fOQsGeiBVH

To preserve himself from not dying in the iceberg by losing consciousness, he had to constantly channel his life force through his body in the Avatar State to maintain the air bubble around him. Thus, even when his body was preserved in his 12-year-old self, his Life Force was significantly drained, which shortened his lifespan tremendously. Despite all the hardships that he had to face since his revival, in the end, he was able to pass on peacefully.
What Do the Fans Have to Say About This?
The natural response to an iconic character making their maker in a show or a film is mostly some form of sadness or upset, and for the life that Aang lived, most people felt he passed on surrounded by the peace that he helped create despite their sadness.
Poor Aang

It really sucks that he didn't live long enough to see his own grandchildren who were also airbenders.
