For many fans, Gyllenhaal has long been the top choice to don the mantle of the Caped Crusader. Now, as the Road House star himself expressed his interest of playing such an iconic role, in acknowledgment of his legacy, fans are hopeful and excited to see him play that character in the foreseeable future.

Currently, Robert Pattinson is playing the Elseworlds Batman, and Michael Keaton could likely return in a brief cameo in the DCU. But the franchise, which is heading for a fresh take on the character with James Gunn and Peter Safran’s The Brave and the Bold, is looking to cast someone new. Only time will tell, despite his strong will, if Gyllenhaal gets the opportunity or not.

Gyllenhaal acknowledges the weight of the role, calling it “a classic” and “an honor.” He reflects on the legacy of actors who have embodied Batman before him, mentioning his upcoming role as Iago alongside Denzel Washington in Othello as another example.  “There’s a history of actors” who have played these iconic parts, Gyllenhaal admits, “and that’s intimidating.”

So that’s the first level. That’s what I’m working on right now. But of course. It would be an honor always,” Gyllenhaal adds. “Those types of things and those roles are classics.
