The film was a box office hit and has since become one of the best films of Witherspoon’s career. However, according to screenwriter Kiwi Smith, singer Britney Spears was also in talks for the role of Elle Woods in the romantic comedy.

“The name Britney Spears was briefly floated,” she revealed on the Hollywood Gold podcast. However, it was also around the same time Witherspoon’s 1999 film Election was released, and their attention shifted to the 47-year-old actress.

“But then Election had just come out. And once we talked about Election, we talked about Reese,” she said. Smith further asserted that although there were loose conversations about other actresses, the script was probably not even sent to anyone else after that, and the role eventually went to Witherspoon.
