Avid fans of Scarlet Witch must already know that she never joined the X-Men force because of the horrendous killing she did in House of M. But, actually, she chose not to work with them because of a traumatic experience from the past.
Marvel Comic’s House of M featured Wanda Maximoff, also known as Scarlet Witch, as a villainous character. In the story, Wanda transformed mutants into powerful beings more superior to humans. However, she felt that Magneto never appreciated her efforts, so she dropped a very threatening line, “No more mutants!” and just like that, she obliterated the majority of the mutant population.
Scarlet Witch Joins The Avengers
Scarlet Witch became an outcast, but it was not the first time she felt isolated. In Avengers #16, created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Dick Ayers, the Avengers wishes to take some time off and have a vacation for a couple of days. Of course, the headquarters cannot be left empty and must be guarded in case of emergency. The Avengers placed an advertisement in the newspaper, and the twins, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver immediately applied.
The mutant twins were once members of Magneto’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. They were not necessarily bad mutants, but they only did it out of gratitude for him for saving their lives. Wanda and Pietro Maximoff were tired of this villain life so they opt to join the Avengers band.
Why not join the X-Men instead? Quicksilver reasoned out, “I wish to forget that we are Homo Superior–born with powers denied to ordinary human beings! But, the Avengers might accept us without caring that we are different–without always reminding us–we’re mutants!”
The stigma that mutants experience, whether they are heroes or villains, is what made the twins choose a different team far from their kind. Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are naturally good-hearted, and all they ever want is to be accepted as they are.
