Starfield‘s massive world amazingly portrays the adventures of space exploration and spaceflights through a unique approach called “NASA Punk,” as explained by Starfield art director Istvan Pely. A NASA space engineer, Robert Chambers, who’s a spaceship expert, has reacted to Starfield about its ship design, space travel, and the whole NASA Punk approach.

Space Engineer Reveals Key Difference Between NASA and Starfield Ships

Robert Chambers is the Director of Strategy for human spaceflight at a company called Lockheed Martin that is developing NASA’s next-gen Orion spacecraft, which will take humans back to lunar space after the Apollo era that ended more than 50 years ago. Chambers is also a big fan of Bethesda’s popular games, Elder Scrolls and Fallout series.

Chambers while talking to IGN, saw a few scenes of spaceship interiors from Starfield that were shown at the Starfield Direct gameplay deep-dive that was held in June and shared his thoughts on how much the game sticks to reality. He stated,

“That little command center in the cockpit is spot on. The shuttle had like 2,500 switches and dials and for Orion, we’re down to pretty much these 3 screens, and a couple of dozen switches for manual overrides. So this looks like the inside of the Orion spacecraft, other than a lot more glass than we get to have on the Orion side.”

He explained that touch screen controls in the command center are exactly how they should be and with the switches and dials it looks like the inside of Orion spacecraft but the main difference he mentioned is that there’s a lot less glass used in actual NASA ships with much smaller windows to avoid the pieces of debris and meteoroid impacts damaging the glass.

Bethesda Aces NASA Punk Aesthetic in Starfield

These comments from Robert Chambers highlight the amazing work that the Starfield team has put up to the game’s NASA Punk aesthetic and real-world spaceflight elements and ensure that they do not hinder the gaming experiment. For instance, most ships in the game have artificial gravity, allowing passengers to walk on the floor just like they would walk on a planet.

Chambers also commented on the realistic spaceship design in the sci-fi scenes and said that small things that Bethesda has done in the game bring it closer to the design of real-world spacecraft such as using all the space to meet the crew’s needs. Bethesda’s ‘NASA Punk’ aesthetic proved a success in almost every scene, and their attention to detail such as in Starfield‘s spacesuits as well as the backpack that acts as life support for the astronauts, played a big role in engaging the gamers.
