In fact, the story centered around a race of immortal beings with superhuman powers had such layered characters, including Richard Madden’s Ikaris, that many fans believed it could’ve been explored more deeply in the form of a miniseries. Moreover, the movie also attracted headlines for containing some glaring plot holes. Regardless, it still boasts a fan base that can’t seem to thank Eternals enough for the experience it provided.

What Fans Are Saying About Eternals Despite Its Underwhelming Plot

Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, Marvel writers shed light on a race of immortal beings, who are forced to come together to face the evil Deviants. The movie resembled The Avengers formula of brimming the plot with not one but several heroes portrayed by fan-favorite names like Angelina Jolie (Thena) and Salma Hayek (Ajax).

Considering a worldwide box office collection of $402.1 million, it would be harsh to label Eternals as a flop, but the film, which came to life on a budget of $236.2 million, had a lot of potential – marred with several plot holes.

Sersi, despite expressing her worries about getting into the limelight as a superhero at the end of Eternals, was also shown fighting a Deviant in the opening act. The writers also didn’t come up with a convincing explanation of why they didn’t join the Avengers. Further, some characters weren’t developed well, not least Hayek’s Ajax who didn’t make it to the end of the movie.

Accordingly, the Chloé Zhao-directed movie was considered a critical disappointment. But some fans have taken to X to appreciate the movie on its two-year anniversary.

Considering that the movie ended on a cliffhanger, fans expect to see Eternals 2, which should provide the makers plenty of opportunity to make amends. However, there hasn’t been any formal announcement from Marvel Studios for a sequel.

When it was announced that Jolie was joining the MCU, many fans were sent into a frenzy. Their excitement only intensified after seeing the first look of Jolie – who sported blonde hair – as Thena, a second-generation Eternal. Speaking about her thoughts on the Marvel character, Jolie noted that her family felt the role was perfect for her.

“My children said they thought [Thena] was the role most like me that we’ve seen,” she said during a press conference (via CBR).

In an interview with CinePop (via Game Rant) the Maleficent actress also admitted she would be happy to reprise the role but suggested she has no desire to do a solo movie on the character.
