Tom Hanks on the Challenge of Delivering Something New to the Audience

During the conversation with Time, Tom Hanks also reflected on the challenges of balancing his iconic image with the need to surprise audiences through his on-screen performances. Acknowledging the enduring challenge of reinvention in the public eye, he said,

There’s no escaping the countenance that goes along with the whole thing; can’t help it. I’ve been babysitting kids on video since Bosom Buddies. But if you’re only giving the audience stuff they’re familiar with, they’re going to hate you. There has to be something new up there.

He also noted that he’s not alone in such quests, as many actors are burdened by reinventing themselves with every new role that they take. However, Hanks also acknowledged some of the Hollywood stars, who have continued to surprise the audience by keeping a sense of mystery in their performance.

“Daniel Day[-Lewis] is one of them, Johnny Depp is one of them to a degree,” he said before Spielberg added the Oscar-winning actor Robert Downey Jr. to the list. However, Hanks argued that lesser-known actors don’t face the same level of expectation and can more easily surprise audiences with their work.
