Who Needs Mr. and Mrs. Smith Anyways?

Well, that question is quite complicated but let us break it down for you. It started back in 2021 when Phoebe Waller-Bridge (from Fleabag fame) joined Donald Glover in creating this series. Soon after, Waller-Bridge dropped and Francesca Sloane joined in on the project.

Since the series takes the concept directly from the 2005 film, several fans asked the question of why a series was needed after all. Thinking two steps ahead, co-creator Francesca Sloane had already asked herself the same question, and as per Deadlinehad the answer ready.

“While we asked questions, so did the internet trolls. Once we were announced, we saw the comment, “Who needs this show?” We didn’t blame them. In a culture heavily inundated with remakes, this was a reasonable reaction. No one would need a show that retold the same blockbuster movie. But what we set out to do was to make something wholly original,”

She further continued,

“As artists I think it’s typical to begin a creative journey with a boatload of philosophical questions. What would a series feel like if our heroes weren’t the two most beautiful people on the planet, but instead, were two lonely people, two underdogs, wanting more from life than what they currently had? What if our John and Jane could be anyone, could be you and me?”

And with that logic in mind, the series creators Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane went ahead with their choice. In a separate interview, Francesca Sloane talked about whether Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie will be a part of the series or not!

Since the series is based on the 2005 movie, Mr. and Mrs. Smith co-creator Francesa Sloane was asked whether Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie were going to cameo in the series. In an interview with The DirectSloane revealed that Donald Glover had some lengthy discussions with Pitt about the show.

“I’ll be real, Donald and Brad hung out. There was, you know, some,–But you know, he gave us his blessings and love for the show. But I think that movie came with a lot of their own history, and I think it’s iconic for when it was done. And I think that, you know, that was a big swing and a miss. But what’s important plays still.”

All in all, the stars will not be making a cameo in the series but Brad Pitt did give his blessings to Mr. and Mrs. Smith. With the series on the verge of release, fans are excited about its launch while others would be waiting for the reviews. The iconic series will be available to stream on Prime Video in the U.S. as it releases on 2 February 2024.
