Despite a shaky start that many doubted the film’s long-term viability, it has changed the game’s rules and become a success. In an interview with Variety, Pixar’s president, Jim Morris, unwittingly revealed the secret tactics that have turned Elemental from an early box office underdog to a possible crown jewel in Disney’s profit treasure trove.

The cinematic journey of Elemental, helmed by the visionary Peter Sohn, got off to an unanticipated stuttering start at the box office. The film’s $200 million budget was much higher than its initial $44.5 million worldwide opening weekend, so it had a long road ahead.

The initial prognosis seemed grim, with many industry experts labeling the film a potential box office bomb. The movie’s journey, however, took on the themes of perseverance, solidarity, and ultimate victory as if written into its narrative.

Despite the odds, Elemental reversed its box office fortunes and showed remarkable growth in the following weeks and months. Its domestic ticket sales increased steadily to $148 million, and its international earnings soared to $425 million.

In an exclusive interview with Variety, Pixar’s president Jim Morris revealed never-before-seen details about the film’s successful development. Morris said the film’s earnings fell short of expectations, which he addressed when discussing the disappointing opening weekend.

Despite all the bad news, they were impressed by how well ticket sales held up. The film’s journey took an unexpected turn, defying industry norms, as some markets showed a mere 12% drop in sales, and a few even showed an increase.

Morris pointed out that this resonation is key to the film’s success. After a rough start at the box office, Elemental has recovered and is on the verge of turning a profit. The film is expected to be profitable for Disney thanks to its many potential revenue streams beyond the traditional box office. Morris looked at precedents to determine the best period between theatrical releases and streaming availability.

“We have a lot of different revenue streams, but at the box office we’re looking at now, it should do better than break even theatrically. And then we have revenue from streaming, theme parks and consumer products. This will certainly be a profitable film for the Disney company.”

Morrison also suggested returning the standard three- to four-month window to accommodate theatergoers and streaming users.

“Thinking back historically, a summer movie would go to pay-per-view in autumn, which gave a three- or four-month window. That would be a traditional window that I’d love to see reestablished. We make our films for the big screen. We love for people to see them with an audience.”

Hearing this, fans have shared their thoughts on how they feel about Pixar’s strategy to stay afloat.

While making films for the big screen is still central to Pixar’s mission, adapting to audiences’ changing tastes is the company’s current challenge. And despite its slow start, Elemental has become nearly as successful as any other Pixar original film.
