Sylvester Stallone has proved just how massively worthy he is, time and time again — both as an actor as well as a filmmaker. A mastermind, he has given some of the most epic performances as an actor and gave birth to some equally commendable works under his direction at the same time. And being the genius that he is, he believes that films like The Godfather can’t be made anymore.
Although the original film, which made Al Pacino one of the most legendary actors of all time, eventually ended up in a trilogy instead of a solo movie, Sylvester Stallone still believes that films like the 1972 masterpiece cannot be recreated or rebooted — by anyone, at that, let alone him. And he has a very valid reasoning behind this opinion. Read on to know more.
Sylvester Stallone Believes Movies Like The Godfather Can’t Be Made Anymore
Everyone knows what a masterwork the 1972’s The Godfather was. For one that granted Al Pacino his much-deserved fame, the movie further went on to spawn two more sequels to be concluded in a trilogy by 1990 with a legacy that continues to go on even now, three and a half decades later.
However, if one were to try and remake the movie now or make movies similar to it, the attempt to make it as perfect and successful would be close to impossible. Well, at least that’s what one of Hollywood’s favorite actors, Sylvester Stallone has to say.
While talking exclusively to RadioTimes.com, the Rambo alum shared this meaningful insight as to why films like The Godfather cannot be made today. He said:
“If you were to make The Godfather today it wouldn’t work. You couldn’t – those actors don’t exist. I mean, it’s a different style.”
He then went on to further explain the reasoning behind this claim: because the times have changed, and so has the mentality. And trying to recreate the masterpiece into a modern form could very well end up firing back since it’s a massive fan-favorite.
As Stallone continued to say:
“It’s, you know, it’s interesting. You look back on films, and very few hold up, because usually they’re made with the same kind of technology and mentality of the times like the ’80s, the ’70s, you can see it.”
Thus, because of all these reasons, The Godfather and similar films from the ’70s and ’80s couldn’t be remade into successful reboots even if filmmakers tried, as per Sylvester Stallone’s excellent reasoning.
At The Same Time, Sylvester Stallone Was Working On A Cliffhanger Remake
While Sylvester Stallone shared why he believes The Godfather couldn’t be remade in today’s day and age, at the same time, he was also busy working on reprising his role as Gabe Walker in the reboot of his 1993 action thriller, Cliffhanger.
Sharing just how much he is looking forward to the Cliffhanger reboot, he said during the same interview:
“I’m expecting to have a lot of good entertainment come out of that. The first one turned out to be sensational.”
But while he is working hard for the remake as well, he isn’t going all in like his 61-year-old co-hotshot from the industry, Tom Cruise, when it comes to all the stunts and adventures. Yet, that hasn’t stopped him from already commending the remake.
“Of course, I’m not hanging from as many peaks as I’d like. Thank God, but I’m the father of my children, my offspring. They’re the ones that carry on the torch. And the script was fantastic. I was actually truly impressed. It’s very hard to, I mean, I read it all, so to be impressed.”
All in all, Sylvester Stallone’s point is true in one way or another: Not all movies can be remade into equally appealing and successful masterpieces; especially not movies like The Godfather.
