Steven Yeun is reportedly out of the race for Sentry in the MCU. The Invincible lead was roped in to play one of the most powerful Marvel characters in the upcoming Thunderbolts movie. Like other Hollywood projects, this movie also suffered the blow of the writers’ and the actors’ strikes. Latest reports indicate that the character might have progressed in such a way during the delay, which Yeun didn’t like.
Thunderbolts is one of the most hyped-up upcoming movies in the MCU. Besides being a team-up movie after a long time in the MCU, it is also marketed as a Suicide Squad-esque ‘Anti-Hero Avengers’ Project. However, the reported exit of Steven Yeun is a significant blow to the upcoming Marvel flick.
Why did Steven Yeun leave the Thunderbolts?
In February last year, the reports stated that The Walking Dead and the Invincible fame would appear as Sentry in the MCU. Although Marvel Studios never officially confirmed the casting, the ardent fans are well-versed in how the Marvel castings are revealed. However, now The Hollywood Reporter suggests a different outcome for Steven Yeun‘s Sentry in the MCU.
It was more surprising as one day before, famous insider Daniel Richtman described how Yeun’s Sentry has one of the best and coolest suit-ups in the MCU. Reportedly, the character progressed unfavorably during the delays, which caused the actor to exit the project. Though, we don’t know any concrete reason behind his departure from the 2025 MCU release just yet.
The news came out first after the DCULeaks page posted an exclusive update on Steven Yeun’s exit from Thunderbolts. Soon, Daniel Richtman cryptically posted a “:(” when the rumor dropped, leading the fans to believe the ominous news might be authentic. Fans also started calling out the insider for reporting about the coolest suit-up a day before.
Steven Yeun was almost confirmed for the role of Sentry
Months before Daniel Richtman, The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman revealed during an interview that the 40-year-old had been for a costume fitting in the MCU. Soon, the rumors started flying, and even Steven Yeun confirmed that he was playing one of the most powerful Marvel characters.
In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter for Netflix’s Beef, the Minari actor described it as an “interesting role” and revealed that he was looking forward to an incredible experience.
“Yeah, Jake Schreier, who did episodes of Beef, got the gig to direct [Thunderbolts] and then he saw me for this role and I read the role and I was like, ‘This is actually a really interesting role, I’d be down to explore this.’ I think it’s less about now checking things off a bucket list and more looking at an experience.”
Thunderbolts is one of those projects that faced massive delays due to repeated issues. The film, slated for a July 2024 release, was pushed back to July 2025. With Steven Yeun reportedly out of the project, it will be interesting to see how the void is filled.
Presently, the Jake Schreier directorial stars Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Wyat Russell, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, and Olga Kurylenko in the lead.
