“Tobey and I had a bit of a rough time”: Tom Hardy isn’t the Only Actor One Mad Max Actress Had a Problem Working With

Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy’s differences on the set of Mad Max: Fury Road have become common knowledge now. Although both have sorted out their differences and accepted where they were wrong, the whispers of what went down on the sets of the film continue to be brought up to date.

Several official sources pointed out just how tense the environment on set was, with the pair either fighting each other or icing each other out. As the years pass, it would seem that Hardy wasn’t the only star to have a problem with Theron, as the actress revealed that another one of her past co-stars was proving to be difficult to work with.

Tom Hardy Wasn’t the Only One

In 1999, Charlize Theron starred in a film called The Cider House Rules, opposite the beloved Spider-Man star, Tobey Maguire. Although the pair played romantic interests in the movie, it would seem that their real-life relationship was quite strained.

During an interview with V Magazine for their Summer Hollywood Issue (via Entertainment Weekly), the actress talked about how she and Maguire had some interesting encounters during the filming of the movie. They seemed to not get along very well, which made filming a movie where they were love interests quite tedious.

Every day [on set was] completely different for a completely different reason. Whether it’s the weather, or the writing isn’t there, or you don’t get along with your castmate, you have to be able to go to something else that’s just as powerful.

Theron explained that filming became quite a chore for her, having to pretend to be devoted to someone she did not even get along with. She added that not getting along with her co-star made every little inconvenience on set ruin her day. It is safe to assume that getting along with her co-star was very important for the actress.

A Learning Experience for Charlize Theron

Later in the interview, Charlize Theron talked about how working on The Cider House Rules with Tobey Maguire became quite a learning experience for her. She first learned that, as an actress, she had the capability to pretend to fall in love with someone she did not get along with.

She was able to fall for Maguire’s character as her own character while keeping their real selves completely out of the equation.

It teaches you different things. It taught me that I could fall in love with somebody in my head while looking at someone else. We had some really intimate moments. Tobey and I didn’t feel that way about each other, so I had to figure something else out.

They were able to have some very intimate moments with each other as love interests, even though they were indifferent towards each other in real life. Even though they have grown past the conflict now, the actress still looks back at the film as a learning experience for herself.
