The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is one of the biggest and most popular games of all time. Bethesda Studios has created something special as the game has surpassed 60 million copies. The game released in 2011; and it is still played quite frequently. It has expanded to practically every console (Playstation, Xbox, Switch, and PC). Todd Howard, the game director of Skyrim, has stated that he hopes that players will have that kind of appeal for their new game Starfield.

Skyrim has become one of the biggest and most popular RPGs of all time. The game has outsold gaming juggernauts such as the original Super Mario Bros. and Red Dead Redemption 2. So will Starfield honor Skyrim’s legacy, and become the next RPG masterpiece?

For those unaware of what Skyrim is, it is an action RPG where you play as The Dragonborn set 200 years after the previous Elder Scrolls game Oblivion. Being the fifth entry in this series can give many people doubt that the game can be as great as its predecessor, but Bethesda did the impossible and made an entry that not only lived up to the previous game but exceeded it in every way!

Within it’s first week of release Skyrim sold 7 millions copies, and it only continued to grow from there. With all the various ports/remasters of the game, Skyrim has become one of the most played games of all time. In June 2023 it was confirmed that Skyrim had sold over 60 million copies since its initial release in  The only other game that could’ve possibly competed with it is Grand Theft Auto V as both games have been released across many different consoles since their initial releases. In the end Skyrim outclassed GTA in almost every way!

While both games are loved by many people and as mentioned they have been rereleased in almost every new console generation, Skyrim is usually the one that people download each new version. A reason for the higher appeal for Skyrim is the type of game that it is. Skyrim is a role-playing game (RPG), meaning each player can create a different playthrough compared to other players. Bethesda Studios went all out for this RPG.

Giving the players complete control of what they want their characters to look and play as is the definition of great RPG, but they didn’t stop there! Setting the game in an open world gives the player numerous options on the order they tackle story and side quests. Players can also play in either first or third person perspective; giving the player the option to truly feel like the character they’ve created for themselves.

One unique feature that also helps Skyrim stand out against the competition is the “morality” system in the game. Throughout the game, you’ll encounter certain characters and items that can only be obtained depending on the characters you kill and spare throughout your journey. While GTA V shares similarities to Skyrim, it fails to compete with it in terms of replay value. Sure people love playing the Online servers for GTA V and there are those that’ll boot it up just to kill NPCs and get chased by the policed, but compared to the vast character and story options available in Skyrim GTA will fall short every time.

Skyrim – Clearing the Field for Starfield

Skyrim

Skyrim is a masterpiece, and while people enjoy the game many are wondering what’s next? Is Skyrim the greatest that Bethesda can go? Well gamers may be in for something special as Bethesda Studios has a new game on the horizon. Starfield is the next game from Bethesda, and it looks to be the next big hit from them. Taking the RPG elements that made Skyrim a huge hit, Starfield sets to go beyond that! Setting the game in space with 1,000 or so planets, moons, and space stations to explore, the open world aspect has definitely been expanded upon. Like Skyrim, the player character starts off with a select amount of skills, but more can be unlocked as you play.
