A Special Method Of Tom Hanks’ Earning From Movies
Tom Hanks’ success is the result of his choice of remarkable scripts and his 100 percent effort to serve justice to the character he plays. Given Hanks’ cinematic prowess, many fans might wonder about his enormous fortune. Currently, Hanks has a net worth of $400 million (per Celebrity Net Worth).
Interestingly though, Hanks has followed an ‘act now and get paid later’ method that, in most cases, earned him a substantial amount of money. Especially, two of his Oscar-winning movies— Forrest Gump and Saving Private Ryan.
Hanks earned an estimated $60 million from Robert Zemeckis’ 1994 romance drama, Forrest Gump taking a cut from the box office that grossed over $680 million worldwide. Hanks played slow-witted Forrest Gump running around his wonderful journey of life.
Hanks’ Captain Miller in Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan also earned him a huge paycheck as he followed a similar method. The 1998 war drama grossed over $482.3 million and Hank walked away with around $30-40 million in his pocket. Both movies combined, the actor earned a whopping $100 million.
Tom Hanks Said He Paid For A Scene In Forrest Gump
Hanks made an astounding revelation when he opened up about the details of what happened behind the scenes of Forrest Gump. The actor revealed that he helped the director Zemeckis backing him with financial aid when Paramount Studios tightened the movie’s budget. In one particular scene, Gump’s classic running across the country was deemed too expensive by the studio and the director turned to Hanks for that.
“And he said, ‘Well, this run is going to cost X amount of dollars.’ And it wasn’t cheap. And I said, ‘OK’. He said, ‘You and I are going to split that amount, and we’re going to give it back [to Paramount]. We’ll give you the money back, but you guys [Paramount] are going to have to share the profits a little bit more.’ Which the studio said, ‘Fabulous, great. OK.’ And it was good for us, too,” Hanks said on In Depth With Graham Bensinger (via The Hollywood Reporter).
Hanks helped the director in some other scenes as well. He even confronted the studio for a scene when they refused to film it as it was too risky and the insurance wouldn’t cover it. Hanks insisted that he’d cover his insurance himself. Regardless, the movie turned out to be a masterpiece and Hanks won an Oscar for his role.
