Tom Holland and Will Smith’s 2019 spy comedy received massive praise for its music, animation, humor, and vocal performance. The Spider-Man: No Way Home actor famously praised the Oscar-winning actor’s movie for leaving a lesson that violence isn’t always the answer. The English actor showed his admiration for Smith’s character.
Three years down the line, Will Smith’s slap during the 2022 Oscar ceremony became the biggest scandal of the year, leading to the King Richard actor’s 10-year ban from the Academy. Smith stormed the stage and slapped comedian Chris Rock for cracking a joke about his wife, Jada Smith.
Tom Holland Highlighted The Message Behind Will Smith’s Spy Comedy
Troy Quane-directed computer-animated spy comedy, Spies in Disguise (2019), starring superspy Lance Sterling (voiced by Will Smith) and Tom Holland as scientist Walter Beckett, became a box office success, grossing $171.6 million worldwide against a $100 million budget.
The English actor famously reflected on the moral of this humorous story, also praising Will Smith‘s pigeon voice in the movie:
“What he (Smith) does is so great. He brings such enthusiasm, such effervescent energy to his character that is so infectious you can’t help but laugh at everything he says.
Especially when he’s a pigeon because Will has such a recognizable voice. Like if you played a short clip of him, you’d say, ‘Oh, that’s Will Smith’, and seeing him as a pigeon is just really funny,”
Tom Holland further noted that the movie allowed him to “find little things to relate” to his character. Narrating the message that the 2019 movie left for kids, Holland explained:
“It was a lot of fun, it was a really, really cool job to be a part of. And you know, you always find little things to relate to in your character, but they’re not necessarily in the way you look or the way you act but it’s in the way you might live your life.
I love that it teaches a good message to kids that violence isn’t the answer and friendship is more important than anything real.”
Spies in Disguise was praised for being a “cheerfully undemanding animated adventure,” that was elevated by its splendid voice cast, becoming one of the beloved family-adventure movies.
Will Smith Should Have Recalled Tom Holland’s Words During 2022 Oscars
The Oscar-winning actor, Will Smith has kept a relatively low profile ever since the Slapgate scandal. The Emancipation actor, who left a message of non-violence for the kids with his 2019 film, stormed the 2022 Oscar stage and slapped comedian Chris Rock for cracking a joke on his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who reportedly smirked as the actor got defamed.
Even though Smith apologized to Rock for his unacceptable behavior after the event, the 2022 Oscars keep reminding Hollywood of Smith’s slap scandal more than his Oscar win for King Richard. The Men in Black actor is now on a 10-year ban from the Academy after his “unprofessional act.”
It was previously reported that Will Smith was trying to move past the embarrassment bestowed upon himself, focusing on meditation, yoga, and spirituality. The actor, who referred to himself as a “painting in growth” while issuing a public apology to Chris Rock, chose violence over ignorance.
Jada Smith, on the other hand, was referred to as a “manipulative b*tch” by Tony Rock (Chris Rock’s brother) during a previous stand-up act, as he called out the Red Table Talk host for forcing Smith into slapping his brother.
