Top 10 Best MCU’s Opening Scenes

An opening scene in a movie is simply the most important scene, mainly because it introduces us to the site, characters, and environment of the scene. This is particularly important in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as each character’s strength changes over the course of time. Each installment falls into a different genre construct.

Across 22 action-packed blockbusters released by Marvel, each movie has its own unique opening scene. Obviously, there have been some opening scenes in the MCU that were stronger than others, so we have compiled the top 10 best opening scenes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

1) Avengers: Age Of Ultron

Avengers: Age of Ultron usually ranks low among many fans’ favorite Avengers films, but it has been a very important building block for MCU Phase 3. It feels more like a bridge between various other MCU movies than a movie that stands on its own. But its opening scene, which captures the Avengers breaking into a Hydra compound to take back Loki’s scepter, is surely a stunning action sequence.

2) Ant-Man

The opening scene of Ant-Man is set in a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility in 1989, as a young Hank Pym discovers that the government plans to duplicate and weaponize his shrinking technology. The scene also features a young Howard Stark and an older Peggy Carter. Several characters were digitally aged and de-aged to bring their characters to the same point in history.

3) Captain America: Civil War

This opening scene played an important role as this movie’s plot revolved around it. The scene featured Bucky getting brainwashed in the ‘90s and then going out to complete a mission for Hydra, shooting out a car’s tires, and eliminating the people inside.

This scene was important because Bucky’s targets turn out to be Howard and Maria Stark, which is what drives Tony Stark and Steve Rogers’ rivalry from Civil War into an intense final battle sequence.

4) Guardians Of The Galaxy

Surprisingly, a movie featuring intergalactic battles opens up on Earth in the ‘80s with a young kid struggling to accept his mother’s death. However, in retrospect, that scene provided the perfect beginning to Peter Quill’s story arc. He’s not a superhero, he’s just a regular kid from Missouri who lost everything. It stood as a perfect start that acted as a bridge between Peter Quill’s past and present.

5) Avengers: Infinity War

The movie had to live up to the six-year hype surrounding the MCU’s big bad, Thanos. He didn’t just have to be a great villain; he had to be the best villain yet.

The opening scene of Avengers: Infinity War reminds the viewers of what Thanos is capable of. This scene establishes this perfectly as Thanos and his sidekicks board the Asgardians’ ship and outdo the Hulk, as well as leaving Thor unconscious and floating through space, and killing Loki.

6) Spider-Man: Homecoming

The opening scene displays Adrian Toomes and his crew are cleaning up the wreckage from the Battle of New York before getting shut down by Damage Control. Angered that Stark is being paid to clean up his own mess, Toomes decides to leave the legitimate business behind and become an alien arms dealer. This scene portrays Toomes’ anger and his determination to pull Stark down.

7) Doctor Strange

The opening scene of Doctor Strange strangely does not include Stephen Strange, but it does immerse us in the weird and wonderful world of the Masters of the Mystic Arts. In the opening scene, Kaecilius and his allies steal some sacred texts from a library in Kathmandu and get pursued through the streets by the Ancient One.

8) Avengers: Endgame

The opening scene of Avengers: Endgame perfectly portrays the emotions of a father losing his family. The scene sees Clint Barton enjoying a family picnic when, all of a sudden, his wife and kids turn to dust.

Fun fact about this scene: Jeremy Renner wasn’t told where his family had gone, so he was just as clueless as Clint. It added a layer of raw authenticity and human emotion to the scene.

9) Captain America: The Winter Soldier

The opening scene of this movie is more than just a thrilling action sequence in which Captain America and Black Widow free some hostages from a ship and extract some data from the servers. It also serves as a plot, it tells us that Cap has been working for S.H.I.E.L.D., and it also tells us that there’s something fishy going on in the organization and that not everybody can be trusted.

10) Iron Man

Iron Man is one of the most fan-favorite Marvel movies of all time, it was surprisingly political, with musings on the War on Terror and the ethics of militarization. The opening scene sets the tone brilliantly, with Tony Stark being escorted through Afghanistan by soldiers.

Suddenly, the convoy is hit, and Stark finds himself dodging bullets and explosions, taking cover behind a rock when a bomb drops next to him. And here’s the twist: it has the Stark Industries logo on it.
