Can you imagine that? Someone threatened to shoot another police officer who said that he would be giving a spoiler of Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick. Yes, that happened. According to court records, an Australian cop Dominic Francis Gaynor jokingly told a colleague who had seen the blockbuster sequel a day prior that if he spoils the movie, he would shoot him.
Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick became a global blockbuster in 2022, grossing over $1.4 billion worldwide. Top Gun: Maverick is a sequel to the 1986 film Top Gun, and follows Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Cruise) as he trains a new generation of fighter pilots for a dangerous mission.
Top Gun: Maverick Super Fan Has Been Sentenced for Pointing His Gun at a Colleague Who Threatened to Spoil the Movie
A police officer has been convicted after he pointed a gun at a junior colleague and said “I’ll shoot you” to stop him from divulging spoilers for the Tom Cruise film Top Gun: Maverick, which caused the victim to experience persistent nightmares of being shot dead.
According to ABC reports, 30-year-old cop Dominic Gaynor took his gun out of its holster and pointed it at his colleague Morgan Royston for “five seconds” during the incident in May. Reportedly, Royson jokingly said that he would spoil the movie.
Then Gaynor laughed and said, “Don’t spoil the movie, c—. I’ll shoot you”.
Gaynor’s lawyer said his client made an awful mistake and that a conviction would “definitely see him removed from the police force.” The lawyer added, “This is going to cost him dearly.”
Gaynor was given a two-year community correction order, 100 hours of community service, and a recorded conviction.
The Fellow Police Officer Fell Into a Depression Following the Incident
Following the happening, the victim Morgan Royston said that he completely lost his trust on the administration and fell into a depression.
Though “sharing jokes and teasing each other” is common among the officers, this went beyond his imagination and he regularly had nightmares about the incident. He said:
“I always thought I would be safe around my trained colleagues. When I see a police officer now, I feel compelled to watch them and make sure their hand is not on their firearm.”
“It has put a permanent fear of harm into my mind, from which I find it difficult to escape,” Royston said.
Top Gun: Maverick becomes the 11th highest-grossing movie in box office history and earned six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.
