We discuss predictions for the HBO Original and Max series True Detective Season 4 Episode 2, including the release date and where to watch online.
The Matthew McConaughey and Barry Jenkins-produced series The True Detective Night Country, an episode titled “Part I,” is an unnerving chapter of a compelling noir. A research team at the Tslalal facility has gone missing—eight men.
They left behind their cell phones. Also, a woman’s tongue underneath the kitchen table appears two days old. The two main characters, Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro, have a history. They worked on a local murder case involving an Inupiaq woman six years earlier.
She was found with 32 stab wounds and wrapped in a parka. The coat looks strangely like one the scientists wear at the Tslalal Research Center. This leads us to ask: Is there a connection between the missing men and the murder from six years prior?
Here’s what happened in True Detective Night Country Season 4, Episode 1:
- Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) is the chief of the Alaskan Police Department. She is called into the Tslalal Research Center to investigate the case of the eight missing scientists. Her underling, Hank (John Hawkes), does not respect her. Hank’s son, Peter, is a junior officer on the squad.
- They find a tongue on the kitchen floor. It was cut out of someone’s mouth. Danvers thinks it has to be from a local Inupiaq woman because of the fish line marks on the appendage. She estimates from the tongue (and the cold cuts on the table) that the men have been missing for 48 hours.
- State Trooper Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) used to work for Danvers. She is obsessed with the murder of Anne Moku Kowat, also known as “Annie K,” who was found brutally murdered. She was also missing her tongue. Navarro feels there’s a connection.
- Both of the main characters are dealing with personal issues. Danver’s stepdaughter, Leah, posted pictures of her and a young girl kissing online. We aren’t sure how old Leah is compared to her girlfriend, but the mother was furious. Navarro’s sister, Jules, is suffering from mental health issues.
- A local trapper, Rose (Fiona Shaw), is having a vision of a man named Travis. We are still determining the connection, whether family or personal. The vision leads her to a spot in the cold Alaskan countryside. She finds three of the missing scientists. All chilled solid, buried in the snow. Their heads are sticking out, frozen in what looks like terrible screams.

Predictions for True Detective Night Country Season 4 Episode 2:
- It was inferred by Navarro that Christopher Eccleston’s character, Connelly, has a relationship that goes beyond professional with Danvers. Is this why Hank has an issue with Liz?
- Did she get the job based on a personal relationship? It will be revealed that Liz earned the job, but Connelly will try to interfere with the investigation based on detective show cliches based on politics.
- What is the significance of the polar bear? Danvers has a child’s stuffed toy that she looks at with sadness, and that’s missing an eye. This leads me to believe it signifies her lost connection with Leah. Perhaps she lost a child of her own at some point.
- If they found three missing scientists, where are the other five? They will likely see more spread across the cold Alaskan tundra.
- Jodie Foster has expressed that she describes her character as an “Alaskan Karen.” Expect the series to explore political divides that delve into the personal. Such as Karen’s relationship with her daughter’s heritage, Navarro’s heritage, and the communities.
