We discuss predictions for the HBO Original and Max series True Detective Season 4 Episode 3, including the release date and where to watch online.
This is where True Detective Night Country kicks it up with a terrifying jump scare, and Jodie Foster slowly turns Liz’s character into an American Karen. In a scene where Foster picks her daughter up from Peter’s place, Kayla’s grandmother is painting kakiniit—the traditional tattoo of the Inuit of the North American Arctic exclusively for women—on Leah’s face.
Liz becomes angry and upset. It’s an offensive scene, making it more striking coming from Foster. She portrays a character that only protects some of the community, not the one that includes the Inuit population. That explains her lack of investigation into Annie’s case. This also makes the relationship with her daughter, Leah, even more perplexing.
Jodie Foster is absolutely superb as an “American Karen” in the True Detective Night Country episode, “Part 2.”
Here’s what happened in True Detective Night Country Season 4, Episode 2:
- Liz (Jodie Foster) refuses to hand the case of the TSALAL researchers to Connelly with the big city of Anchorage, PD. While examining the bodies, one of them wakes up. The bodies are moved to the local ice rink to keep them preserved and slowly thaw for forensic purposes.
- One of the researchers has a spiral symbol on his forehead. Peter then finds out that Clark is missing from the mass of frozen bodies. Peter’s father’s social life consists of a relationship with a woman in Russia. He sends her money.
- While taking a picture of his son in a frame to send her, Hank notices the Annie case file is missing. He heads over to the ice rink and physically abuses Peter. Navarro also has family issues. Her sister is causing her grief, going through manic episodes.
- She visits the bar she works at. There, she finds a man who recognizes Clark. That man tells her his cousin sold him a trailer years ago. Navarro finds the vehicle parked at the nook, an area where dead bodies are kept during the winter season.
- Peter finds a witness who says Clark had the spiral symbol tattooed on his chest. Liz does some research, and a local tattoo artist keeps records and produces an image of the researcher with the artwork. Liz tells Navarro that the case of Annie and the dead TSALAL workers are connected.
- In the trailer, they find Annie’s cell phone, which was never recovered. Also, there is a mummified dead body and a giant spiral symbol on the ceiling.

Predictions for True Detective Night Country Season 4 Episode 3:
- Two men overreact during this episode. One is Connelly, with whom Liz is having an affair. He stops short of threatening her job if she doesn’t hand over the case to her. The other is Hank, who resorts to obtuse overreaction when Peter takes the Annie K file. Could one of them be behind the murder? If I had to put money on it, Hank.
- What is the meaning of the spiral circle? Some connect to one similar in the first season, where Rust Cohle quotes Nietzsche with eternal recurrence theory, which is about a “flat circle.” I think this follows an overall theme of the series, not a clue. A Google search shows the “spiral” has meaning in Inuit culture about growth and harmony.
- Is Clark behind the spiral symbols? If he bought the trailer, does that mean he drew it? Then, he would be the one who left the symbol on one of his coworkers’ foreheads. Does this mean Clark is the killer? That seems too easy, and maybe a red herring. I would keep an eye out for the women at the factory.
