We discuss predictions for the HBO Original and Max series True Detective Season 4 Episode 4, including the release date and where to watch online.
The True Detective Night Country episode “Part 3” is another solid and suspenseful outing, using flashback sequences to unveil twists at almost every turn. The episode explores why Danvers objects to her daughter’s need to reach out to her cultural heritage. The simple reason is that Indigenous women in the region die and are killed frequently.
The episode also contains a few new mysteries. For instance, the flashback of Annie, who was a midwife, and The connection between Clark and the unsolved murder. A man named William Wheeler was responsible for Danvers and Navarro’s split. Finally, the scientists may not have frozen to death, and a man named Oliver may have held the key.
Here’s what happened in True Detective Night Country Season 4, Episode 3:
- There’s a flashback of meeting Annie. Navarro had a warrant for her arrest for illegal protests. She is a midwife and could not be brought in because she was in the middle of a delivery.
- Hank uses some local hillbillies to search for Clark on the ice—the type of crowd who protest Indeginous rights on land rights. Navarro and Danvers (Jodie Foster) discovered that a local hairdresser knew Clark was seeing Annie before her death. However, he withheld it.
- Liz tells Pete that she and Navarro had a falling out because of a man named William Wheeler. He murdered his young girlfriend and then committed suicide. Liz and Navarro came up on the scene. She says Navarro could never get over it.
- However, we see a different scene play out when she tells the story. The woman lies dead, but Wheel is alive. He has a maniacal smile and is whistling. Navarro admits to Vince that her mother was murdered, like so many Indigenous women in the region. Later, her sister is found at the site of their mother’s murder in the snow. Navarro locates her and takes her back.
- A man named Oliver, who is blank, left Tsalal right before Annie’s murder. They locate him but hold a gun, telling them they have no legal right to be on his property. They break the news to say to him the scientists are dead. This frightens him, and he still orders the police from his home.
- Peter’s veterinarian cousin thinks the men died before being frozen. That’s because, studying animals, they usually die peacefully from the heart rate dropping in the cold. These men’s faces are different showing fear and panic before they died.

Predictions for True Detective Night Country Season 4 Episode 4:
- Why does Hank have a lousy track record with the Annie murder case? First, he refuses to hand over the files to Liz. Then, when Peter takes them and gives them to his boss, Hank physically assaults him. Now, we find out he kept vital information from the investigators. It will pass, and Hank will admit his part in the coverup.
- Liz and Navarro both have scenes where they see, by all accounts, dead people and talk to them. One is Anders, who survived the cold but died in the hospital. He sits up, for some reason not in pain, and tells Navarro her mother says hi. To me, this is not real, and most likely, Anders died when Liz left the room. The comment is because her mother is on her mind.
- Liz, however, in a flashback, says Wheeler is dead. However, he turns his head and whistles. We don’t buy the story that Wheeler killed himself. Since this scene is in flashback, not in real-time, Wheeler was alive. That leaves the question: how did he die? It will be revealed that mystery is the reason Navarro left the APD.
