HBO’s True Detective stands out among police shows for its contemplative approach to storytelling in general. While centered on murder mysteries, each season delves into profound questions about existence and the passage of time. Rather than a traditional “whodunit,” the series explores the broader meaning of life. The fourth season will be released soon and we have the full details for the upcoming season.

Premiering in 2014 with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, the first season became a hit, drawing massive viewership. The 2016 second season, focused on government corruption and organized crime, didn’t resonate as strongly with fans. Thankfully, the third season in 2019 picked up where things left off on a good note. Season 3 followed detectives Wayne Hays and Roland West investigating the murder of Will Purcell and the disappearance of his sister and the way the season ended made it clear fans were not taken for fools this time around.

According to Country Living, the official logline for the upcoming season reveals the disappearance of the eight men operating the Tsalal Arctic Research Station during the long winter night in Ennis. Detectives Liz Danvers (portrayed by two-time Oscar-winner Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) must confront their inner darkness and delve into the haunted truths beneath the eternal ice to solve the mysterious case.

Obviously, the setting is perfect for True Detective in every single way. True Detective: Night Country premieres on HBO on January 14, 2024, and will be available to stream on Max. The hype for the show is unprecedented and that’s evident from the Rotten Tomatoes score the season got, as it’s sitting at an insane 100% score right now. Most reviews mention the same thing – it revitalized the whole show for good.

True Detective: Night Country marks several significant firsts for the series. It is the first installment without creator and executive producer Nic Pizzolatto leading the way. On top of that, Jodie Foster takes on her first starring role in a television series in over 40 years, where she will portray Liz Danvers. Her last significant movie role before this was the 1991 all-time classic – Silence of The Lambs.

Despite her acting hiatus, Foster has established herself as a director, contributing to various shows in her recent career, including Orange Is the New Black and Black Mirror. That said, the general consensus for just about everyone who watched the seasons is that Jodie Foster is the best thing about the show and it’s simply impossible to look away from her.
