Hollywood stars Tom Hardy and Mahershala Ali are set to share the screen in 77 Blackout, a gripping crime thriller helmed by director Cary Joji Fukunaga. The film unfolds amid a power loss in the ‘city that never sleeps,’ as it plunges into darkness, giving rise to chaos and lawlessness.
Written by Frank John Hughe, the film delves into the heist plan of five rogue police officers in 1977, who target three criminal strongholds in a single night; the Hong Kong Triads, the Italian Mafia, and the Harlem Mob. However, things take an unexpected turn when a city-wide blackout strikes on the night of the robbery.
As per Deadline, Oppenheimer producer Charles Roven along with Madison Weireter for Atlas Entertainment, and William Green and Aaron Ginsburg for The Cut are set to produce the upcoming film. It will be presented to international buyers at the Cannes market, with WME holding U.S. rights for the movie.
The director of the film Cary Joji Fukunaga is known for his work on acclaimed films like Beasts of No Nation and the 2021 James Bond film No Time to Die, along with the HBO anthology crime drama True Detective. The filmmaker is also an executive producer and director on the upcoming Band of Brothers miniseries Masters of the Air.
