Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 is bringing a fresh approach to multiplayer with a feature from Gears of War. Saber Interarctive’s Oliver Hollis-Leick confirmed that each player will assume a separate character within the game’s co-op mode.
Hollis-Leick talked about how players could take on the roles of Titus, Chiron, and Gadriel. Much like how Gears of War assigns specific characters to players. As we near the September 9th release date for the game, the excitement is only growing.
Saber Interactive’s Approach to Creating a Multiplayer Mode for Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2
In an interview with GameReactor, creative director Oliver Hollis-Leick went into great depth about the development of the game. And one of the things touched upon was the game’s co-op mode.
You’ve got these four characters, and you take on one of them each. So, it’s very much the same. You’ll drop in, you’ll be assigned your characters, and it’ll be Titus, Chiron, and Gadriel, and you’ll be distributed on them.
The co-op mode, dubbed ‘Operations,’ introduces a three-player squad setup where each participant embodies a unique class with distinct abilities. Players will command squads, carrying out orders from the protagonist, Titus, and experiencing different sides of the same war.
Hollis-Leick detailed how these operations contribute to the broader military campaign in the game. Set across three planetary bodies, players undertake objectives that support Captain Titus’s campaign.
The game’s Battle Barge serves as a hub where players can see ships taking off for missions and returning for repairs, creating a dynamic and immersive environment that reflects the vast scale of the Warhammer 40K universe.
And you’ve got Captain Acheron up in the battle barge keeping a close eye on things and sending updates. It’s meant to feel like an interconnected military group, not just three guys on a mission alone on a faraway planet.
The decision to include this feature was inspired by the desire to bring a more human element to the superhuman Space Marines. By allowing each player to control a separate character, the game aims to create a more immersive and engaging experience where players feel a deeper connection to their characters and their actions.
Space Marine 2 Has Got A Lot of Things Right
The game’s attention to detail, particularly in the movement and feel of the Space Marines, was informed by extensive collaboration with Games Workshop.
Hollis-Leick noted how the creative team worked closely with Jez Goodwin, the creator of the Space Marine, to ensure authenticity in the design and animation.
So, when we very first began creating the game, we met with Games Workshop, sort of introduced us to a guy called Jez Goodwin, who is the creator of the Space Marine. And he’s a great guy, and he brought along this black notebook, and he opened it up, and there are all these sketches of his in there.
Customization plays a significant role in the game, allowing players to personalize their Space Marines with different classes, armor, and weapons.
As players progress through the game, they unlock various classes and customization options, encouraging them to experiment with different playstyles.
