Watchmen Director Damon Lindelof Exits Star Wars While Taika Waititi Set to Direct and Star Despite $250M Thor 4 Debacle

The Star Wars universe is notorious for its constant supply of rumors and conjectures regarding future projects. For a different reason, fans are buzzing about a new development: Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson have left the next Star Wars movie that Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will helm.

Notwithstanding the backlash he received after the $250 million failure of Thor 4, Taika Waititi is moving forward with plans to direct and appear in another forthcoming Star Wars movie.

Midway through the month of February, Damon Lindelof and Britt-Gibson allegedly sent in a script draft for their Star Wars project. While Lucasfilm has hired a replacement writer, the resignation of Lindelof and Britt-Gibson has left some viewers puzzled.

Damon Lindelof expressed concern about his role in the Star Wars universe during an interview with SlashFilm at SXSW, noting the “extremely high” degree of difficulty necessary in crafting a great Star Wars movie.

“I will just say, that for reasons that I can’t get into on this Sunday morning, on this day, the degree of difficulty is extremely, extremely, extremely high.

He further uses analogies like “maybe I shouldn’t be cooking. Maybe I should just be eating” to explain his possible reasons for quitting the project.

“If it can’t be great, it shouldn’t exist. That’s all I’ll say, because I have the same association with it as you do, which is, it’s the first movie I saw sitting in my dad’s lap, four years old, May of ’77. I think it’s possible that sometimes when you hold something in such high reverence and esteem, you start to get in the kitchen and you just go, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t be cooking. Maybe I should just be eating.’ We’ll just leave it at that.”

Damon Lindelof is best known for his work on HBO’s critically acclaimed series Watchmen and The Leftovers. Britt-Gibson, meanwhile, has worked as a writer and co-producer on the Starz series Counterpart.

While news of Damon Lindelof and Britt-Gibson’s departure from the project may be disappointing for fans, it seems that the Star Wars franchise is still in good hands, as director Taika Waititi is set to direct and star in another upcoming project for the franchise.

Despite the criticism of Thor 4, which some viewers found overly excessive and self-referential, Waititi is still well-liked in the film industry and will undoubtedly add his flavor to the Star Wars Universe.

The situation of the Star Wars canon appears to be changing at present, with certain initiatives undergoing setbacks and others making progress. In any case, next month’s Star Wars Celebration will reveal a new film, so fans may get a glimpse into the future of their beloved franchise.
