The character became a man out of time when he woke up 70 years later in the modern world. But he still had the same determination and admirable qualities that led him to inspire other superheroes in the Avengers team. But he never forgot the era where he came from. A deleted scene from The Avengers reemphasized the strong connection the character had with war veterans.

Chris Evans‘ Captain America and other superheroes including Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, and Hawkeye came together to fight against the evil schemes of Loki and the Chitauri army in The Avengers. The climactic Battle of New York became the main highlight of the film and saw the ultimate battle between the team and Loki’s army.

However, a deleted scene from the sequence seems to have harkened back to Captain America’s origins in a heartwarming way.  As IMDB puts it, a deleted scene from the Battle of New York saw a brief but impactful scene between the character and a war veteran that reminded him of the unbreakable bond between him and war veterans of WW2. The site wrote,

“Reportedly, a scene was filmed where, during the final battle, Captain America saves an old man trying to protect his grandchildren. He tells him to “Get them to cover”, but as he walks away, the old man asks him “Cap, is that really you?” He turns and, noting the man’s World War II veteran lapel pin, trades salutes with him. As Captain America sprints away, the children ask their grandfather, ‘Do you know him?’, and he replies ‘we all know him.'”

This would have been a great moment of self-reflection for the character. However, the choice to not include it in the film is also understandable since it would not go together with all the bombastic things happening around during the battle.

Chris Evans ended his tenure as Captain America in Avengers: Endgame. Since then, fans have been speculating and clamoring for the return of the character in a future MCU film. When GQ asked Evans if he would ever play the role again, he explained that he would never return to the franchise for financial purposes.

He would only return if the story felt right and if it stayed true to the legacy he left behind. He said,

“Yeah, maybe. I’ll never say never, just because it was such a wonderful experience. But I’m also very precious with it. It’s something that I am very proud of. And like I said, sometimes I can’t believe it even happened. And I wouldn’t want the black eye if it felt like a cash grab or if it didn’t live up to expectations or if it just felt like it wasn’t connected to that original thing.

So, no time soon. And ultimately I really hope to just maybe act a little bit less in my life. I have a lot of other interests. Look, by no means have I climbed any sort of a mountain in this field. I have no Oscars and I’m not lumped with other names that are at the top of the mountain in any way. But I also feel very satisfied.”

It remains to be seen whether Marvel brings back Evans and the character in a future MCU film. For now, Evans is happily married and also recently revealed that he wants to slow down on his acting ventures.
