While fans have been waiting for a sequel patiently for 21 years, any advancement for a sequel has been met with positive reception. Albeit to the audience’s disappointment nothing ever materialized for the much-awaited sequel.

However, recently in Andy Cohen’s Sirius XM show, Lohan confirmed that a sequel to the 2003 flick is in the works.

Though Lindsay Lohan refrained from revealing any more details about the production, she did state that both Jamie Lee Curtis and she were excited to be on board the creative endeavor.

Earlier in October 2022, Jamie Lee Curtis was asked to share her views on reprising her role for a possible sequel. To this, Curtis replied that she was creatively wide open to undertake the opportunity.

Curtis further shared her input for the possible plot of the film. She wished to portray a “Hot Grandmother” who switches places with Lohan’s “Helicopter Parent” in the present time.

Earlier Iteration

The iconic movie was based on Mary Rodgers’s 1972 novel Freaky Friday in which a mother and daughter switch bodies due to a magical fortune cookie, however, this was not the first adaptation of the book. The first adaptation of the book was released in 1976 featuring Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster as the mother-daughter duo who switch bodies.

Summer Switch (1984) was the second attempt to bring this classic story on screen with gender-swapped roles, which wasn’t a success. Subsequently, A Billion for Boris was the third attempt that made several significant changes to the story, which wasn’t a huge success either.

Another movie greenlighted by Disney starring Shelley Long and Gaby Hoffmann was the fourth attempt to cash on the fantastical tale by direct TV release. At last, the 2003 movie with Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan broke the curse of below-par adaptations and earned $160.8 million at the box office.

Future of the Freaky Friday Franchise

Later in 2018, a musical television film was produced by Disney which starred Cozi Zuehlsdorff and Heidi Blickenstaff. However, Disney’s attempts to revive the popularity of the classic movie through a musical fell short.

The 2018 Freaky Friday became the lowest-rated Disney Channel Original Movie premiere of the 2010s. At its premiere, the movie attracted only 1.58 million viewers with a 0.29 rating.

Despite the failed attempts to mimic the success of the 2003 hit, Freaky Friday’s future looks great, as both Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis have confirmed their participation in the upcoming reboot.
