Being an A-list star and one of the most celebrated actors, he has certain rules that he follows and boundaries that he doesn’t cross. His infamous rule of not starring in any superhero films has always baffled audiences as other A-list stars enjoy doing them.

The superhero genre has been the launchpad of many actors in the industry and it helped them boost their careers. A-list movie stars like Robert Downey Jr, Hugh Jackman, and Christian Bale have relished their time playing Iron Man, Wolverine, and Batman respectively, and are widely celebrated all over the world for playing these roles. Playing these iconic characters has made them bankable movie stars.

However, one such actor who refuses to do such movies is Leonardo DiCaprio. As put by X user @BlurayAngel, the actor is not interested to do superhero films and maybe looks down on the genre. He most likely shares Martin Scorsese’s stance on such movies that they are not cinema. However, the fanfare and the immersive cinematic experience brought by Downey Jr, Jackman, and Bale through their films say otherwise.

DiCaprio’s disdain towards the genre is evident as he advised young actors like Timothée Chalamet to not do such films. It is a weird viewpoint as most filmmakers have now brought a certain maturity and sensibility to current superhero films. The genre has made its place among major award conversations, just like what Chadwick Boseman‘s Black Panther did some years ago.

Despite the current discourse on the staleness of recent superhero films, the genre has carried the box office during the pandemic and has kept the industry going. Christopher Nolan recently acknowledged and thanked Marvel films for keeping the business running during that time (via The New York Times). Thus, if any film including a superhero movie has a great story and heart, people are going to turn up.

In 2022, Timothée Chalamet revealed that Leonardo DiCaprio gave him two essential career advice, which were, “No hard drugs and no superhero movies.” (via Vogue) In a recent interview with The New York Times, the actor surprisingly revealed his openness to commit to superhero film under some conditions.

Chalamet revealed that Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight inspired him to become an actor. He knows that if done well, the genre can be much more than bombastic action and explosions. While he still has DiCaprio’s advice in mind, he would certainly consider doing a superhero film if the script and director were great. He said,

“Well, Leonardo DiCaprio said to me, ‘No superhero movies, no hard drugs.’ Which I thought was very good. I follow them both! But the movie that made me want to act is a superhero movie, ‘The Dark Knight.’ If the script was great, if the director was great, I’d have to consider it.”

Chalamet is currently gearing up for the release of Dune: Part Two which is releasing in theatres worldwide on March 1, 2024. DiCaprio on the other hand, is shooting for Paul Thomas Anderson’s next film.
